cooler question
im gonna be replacing the trans in my 05 GTO. my first fuddle converter took a dump, and my second one is taking one too so im gonna flush the lines and replace the cooler, but i dont know which one to get. a local speed shop carries derale products, so im looking at derale incase my trans gets here this week i can do it all at once. my question is, should i get one with or without a fan? i was looking at their fin and plate coolers, but they also make some with fans attached. theres not a big price difference either. their biggest plate and fin (10x10x1-1/4) is about $90 (online), whereas one of the ones with a fan is $150.

With fans you have more options for locating it and
you can get the transmission heat dump off of the
radiator thermal stack (bad enough just with the A/C
condenser plus undercored stock rad). You could put
it into one of the wells before the wheels even, maybe
with some louvering / slotting of the guard plastic.
Get it to draw from a cool source and so on.
I have little thermostats and PC 12V muffin fans to
do the same thing to my plain cooler, the cost for
that way is less than the retail difference you show
but not spectacularly so (given the fans are used
and I have to cobble up my own shroud etc.).
Unshrouding the radiator you can do "dope style"
or make your own plan; "dope style" needs the
rolling airflow to force air through the cooler and
a fan (pair) would still make that more effective.
But shedding the heat into the radiator airstream
is still kind of a zero-sum proposition (aside from
not actively impeding the airflow).
