I tried making a few passes to blow out the cobwebs on the Z today and i ran into a problem shifting into 3rd gear. My 1st-2nd gear shift seems ok but when i go to shift into 3rd gear the car lays on the rev limiter at 5500 rpms and will not shift out unless i let off the accelerator. My shift points are at 6500 rpms and rev limiter is at 6800 rpms through ed wright tuning. I top off the fluid level because it was a little low but still had the same problems after i corrected the fluid level. Could it be the shift valve getting stuck? Any ideas can help because the new TCS 4400 is going into the car next week and i would like to get the problem fixed while the tranny is out.

Shift point needs to be moved down or the rev limiter up.

Like the man said your MPH shift point have to be moved down. Hot/poor air can drop your MPH enough to affect this if your MPH/RPM are cutting it close. Also, watch your tranny temps.

Mine had a similar problem after I finished building it. Lowering 2/3 shift point helped, but the bottom line was that the clutch packs were slipping on 2/3. The 2/3 shift was not crisp (could last for as much as ~1 sec). Finally had it rebuilt (thanks to Mike at Yank before he moved) a month ago and that fixed the problem.

Could just be lots of hard wear on the clutches.

I had the tranny rebuilt 4 months ago so the clutches are hardly worn and i run a tranny cooler as well. My tranny temps stay within 172-178 degrees.

I don't understand how my tuning droped the rev limiter down,it's supposed to be locked in? If it did why am i hitting it at 5500 rpms when it is set at 6800 rpms??? Also the transmission fluid looks very clean.

Sounds like the 2-3 clutch is out.

i have the same problem and the car is 100 stock 98 with 4l60e and no slippage problems other than 2-3 shifts have seen alot of guys on here with the smae problem, and no fix even guys with rebuilt trans do this why?

Scott, whether or not it was recently rebuilt or not, I bet the clutches are gone. When I was having mine built by a guy here in town, they only lasted ~1000 miles before it would crap out again. There is a guy in Houma, La. that IS the **** on these trannies. $650.00 for a race prep if you send him the tranny. Email me and I'll give you his name/#.
He has trannies that are living behind 10 sec supercharged cars. 4l60e trannies that is. He did the one in my wifes car and she is rough on it and after 1.5 years, NO problems what so ever. Several people around here have used him and NONE have had problems.

Tim,thanks for the info but i got the hook up on a race tranny It seems the problem is related to the motor from what me and paul (thunder racing) have come up with. Sounds like my 918s spring are gone after 25K miles of racing,atleast that is what were hopeing for.

Found the problem It turns out the tranny checked out fine,along with revlimiter and fuel pressure. The problem was a pinched knock sensor wire and was causeing low voltage,so the knock sensor was maxing out the KR at WOT and cutting off the fuel. All is fine now after cutting out the broken section on the wire and rewireing the PCM.

I heard low voltages are often over looked as the problem, but learned they can cause issues because of the "e" in the 4l60-e needs the correct voltage to operate... anyone?

Where was this wire pinched at? I am having an issue such as this with a built tranny as well.

The wire is located on the top PCM prom under the hood but your wire maybe in a different location in the PCM,so i would get a helms or a chart with the location of each wire to be sure you looking at the right one.
