Default When are the engine mounts bad?

I've got a decent amount of Shake in the car when I shut it off. I also feel like I'm getting a lot of...vibration(?) through the steering wheel when driving. I don't see any leaking on the mounts, but I thought I recalled seeing the engine shaking at turn off a sign.

Yep, sound like what my car was doing, but I had stains on the oil pad as well from both mounts leaking.

I haven't seen any leaking yet, but it really rattles when revving as well.

Definitely check out your harmonic balancer. Wobbling balancer could be a cause of vibration as well. My car had both when purchased at 75k. Now I have dual mass flywheel vibrations and issues lol.

Look at your engine shake at idle and shut it down. You can see if your mounts are worn

They are bad straight out of the factory. Replace them with poly mounts.

LOL sad but true.

Poly mounts will transmit more harmonics/vibration tot he chassis though.

Mine are still good at 110k miles. To answer your question, engage the clutch while keeping on the brake and have someone watch the engine. Do this rocking the clutch on and off several times. If they've collapses or are hollow they will allow the engine to visibily rock side to side depending on the deflection of the power on/off.

Compared to leaking stockers, my car is smoother with the poly's installed.

you know your motor mounts are bad when you take them out of the car and dust pours out of them..

installed umi mounts and got the added bonus of being able to lower the motor almost an inch by taking the through bolts out which made the clutch install easier....

So from what I'm seeing, looks like UMI are the way to go with the heat shields? I don't think I've seen any threads with anyone complaining about heat damage.

They are probably the last mount you will need. But they do cause more vibrations.

What kind of vibrations and where? Just more vibe through the steering wheel? When the car shuts off?

I installed revshift blue ones and like them. Cut my vibration down to almost nothing.

They leak from the top of the mounts, if it shakes like a diesel truck when you shut it off, your mounts are bad.

Every MM will go bad, just buy the poly mounts and be done with it.

Yes, that's exactly what it feels like. I couldn't think of how to describe it, but that is perfect.

Haven't replaced them yet, but have noticed a vibration/shimmy during acceleration/deceleration when engaged in gear. I feel it through the steering wheel and in thr front/bottom of the car, if that makes sense.

When the clutch is depressed, it's smooth and no issues. Related?

Hard to say... but I know a good way to find out.

REPLACE THOSE MOUNTS!
