Default 05 cts-v rod thru pan, what would you do?

On the way home from work last night I put a rod through the pan. I havent pulled the motor yet, put i assume that the block and one head might be toast. So, what would you do or what have you done? Go with an LS2 and reuse the 243 heads? Find ls-6 short block? Sell it? Its my commuter car, not a race car by the way.

If it's your DD, I'd think another LS6 would be easiest. I am of the understanding that if you go LS2/3 you will need to use various adapters and such for things like the crank reluctor and whatnot that aren't the same. Though if you could add a bit of displacement for roughly the same cost, why not?

Get a ls2 block, make a 408 out of it call it good. Or just buy the lq9 in for sale thread and sell your head for some money

http://sdparts.com/details/scoggin-d...r/sdls6sb347sp complete LS6 shortblock.
I saw that gmpartsdirect has LS3s new for $5,100. Not sure the effort required, but I'd take a 436 hp 6.2 liter any day over a 400 hp 5.7 liter.

edit: maybe not

Where are you located and what resources do you have available to you? You are likely to be hit pretty hard with the Cadillac tax not only b/c its a V, but from any mechanic's perspective you threw a rod and that means you beat on the car so they will charge in anticipation that you will return looking for subsequent repairs free of charge or at a discount. Not saying everyone is like this, but mechanics are on flat rate and some amount of "come back" time is usually anticipated for jobs like this bumping the price.

What exactly what are you looking for? Price, reliability, performance, ease of repair? While you may be able to reuse the heads, they will likely need reconditioning if installed on a new short block...so the price savings there are pretty much negated.

If price is the consideration, you can get just about any LS motor (5.3 or 6.0 truck motors are probably the cheapest and most abundant by far) and swap your accessories. A 6.0 LQ4 or LQ9 with 317 heads (exact same as 243's, only with a larger chamber lowering compression slightly) with a cam kit would be a nice bump in performance and will accept all of your accessories while being the cheapest alternative, and would probably be the way that I would go if I popped mine (already have one waiting, LOL). I have my own shop and my labor is free though.

As stated, a new LS6 comes with a 3yr/50k warranty but will set you back $6-$8k after all is said and done.

I'll make you a deal on a small cammed LS6 with 70k miles on it. I can then buy the lq9 in the classifieds section =)

Here you go.......... https://ls1tech.com/forums/parts-cla...ls7-crank.html

It has a 24X reluctor already installed.

If you go this route (or any other requiring a pan), I have an extra V pan PM me if you're interested.

I am starting to get prices. I found an ls3, that needs heads intake etc, $2500. The LS2 block seams like a fair price, but I am in NJ.

Anomoly, What would the car be worth as-is?

Wow that sucks man, sorry to hear that.

I would start looking at the deal from the big picture 30K foot level. How many miles are on the car? How good of a condition is it in? How long will you keep it after repair?

The easiest mechanically is to just go back in with what came out... find a pullout and swap it in over a long weekend...

If its in good shape and fairly low miles, then I would get the most cubes you can get affordably. LS2/LS3 not sure what the complications are, so I would research that...

If I were to push a rod through my LS2, I might take the opportunity to go stroked 408... or if I was feeling cheep/poor I would find a stock LS2 short block assuming my heads arent jacked...

All in all its a bummer.... LQ9 is worth researching as they seem alot cheaper....

I was cruising at 60 mph in 6th in heavy traffic when the car started bucking. I've been pretty easy on the car, but only had it since february, so who knows what the previous owner did.

The gmpp 19210918 engine is discontinued, but there are a few around for around 3k. Probably 1500-2k for labor locally.

I am gonna try and work out a price on the ls3 block, with l92 heads from gmpp, i can get an intake for free and already have an ls2 tb. Im thinking if i run an lingenfelter box i can stick with the stock pcm and copy the tables from a 2010 camaro over.

But now im also thinking of trying to go with a 4l65 or 70

How mechanically inclined are you? The absolute best thing you could do (financially speaking) is tear down the old one and see exactly what needs to be replaced. I'm sure there are many components that could be saved.

The tunnel is too narrow for even the 60...think a few have tried but so much has to be modded to widen the trans tunnel that nobody has completed one. Good to hear that you are going to get a build underway, really sucks that it has to be under these circumstances though.

Just to echo the previous word of caution, be very very weary of buying the Lingenfelter junk box...you will be kicking yourself in the *** for not having the ring changed on the crank, especially when you are already have it apart and will be nearly the same price.

Quick Reply: 05 cts-v rod thru pan, what would you do?
