Default 1988 Camaro IROC-Z 5.3/4l60e swap

The car

The old 305/T5

After electrical wires, A/C removal, and pressure wash. Lots of surface rust.

The 45k mile 5.3 cleaned up a bit and painted.

Super clean!

My 5$ alternator relocation bracket, so it will clear the hood.

The 50k mile 4l60e from a 4th generation F-body.

The car started life as a 305tbi with a T5 transmission. I added a spintech 3" catback, SS wheels, and a hurst short shifter. It was still very slow but fun to drive. After it overheating, trashing a belt, and the fuel pump going out all in one day I decided to pull everything out and start from scratch. My budget is very low as I'm in college working part time. It will be stock with a dual plane intake,Holley 650, msd 6010, tci ez tcu transmission controller and at least a 3600 converter. Cam/valve springs will be later down the road when I get more money. That's it for now, I will post pictures of
the engine bay cleaned up and painted this week.

Thanks for looking, Nick.

Did some rust repair with a grinder. Found a nice rust spot on the strut tower that was covered by bondo.

After some Etching primer.

And normal primer 2 coats

And some rust preventive undercoating underneath.

Got the brake booster painted. It stuck to the primer really well

Its amazing how a few bucks worth of rattle cans can make a big difference. Did u just bolts the alt in the same place as the oe tensioner? Will u have to use an idlers or make a mount for a tensioner?

Yes, i bolted it to to the spot on the water pump where the tensioner usually is. I used 3 bolts (3" x 7/8" i believe) and washers to adjust everything out to where it would line up with the belt. i used a (7" by 1/4" turnbuckle) to adjust the tension on the belt. So that will be the tensioner.

Well I sold my 17" "ZR1" wheels, so I have a few updates.

MSD 6010 box.

1" set back adapters with clamshells for the stock engine mounts.

Got a new 4l60e cable and side bracket off of eBay for cheap.

New transmission mount.

Corvette servo installation.

All done for now. I also picked up ls1 F-Body manifolds for 50$ locally. I ordered an oil fitting for the back of the intake, and a temperature fitting for a mechanical oil and temp gauge. Also a painless E-Fan 30 amp relay harness and a painless 30 amp fuel pump harness. Also ordered the TCI EZ TCU handheld display screen and wiring harness off of eBay. TCI said I could buy the box from them for 300$. So I'll end up paying 470$ for the trans controller instead of 615$!! All I have left is to figure out which intake to buy, and buy a ls1 oil pan and it will be in the car. Can't wait.

That is going to be a great ride. I had an 87 Iroc. I loved how the car drove but could not live with how slow it was. Looks like you are solving that problem.

My TA with the 92 tbi 5.7 swap actually held its own against many a rides. Killed lt1 cars usually. But in the end, was ultra happy ditching it for a 355 vortec with cam. Now it is even sweeter. Keep up the good work. Hope to get my 91 b4c don't next year with income tax.

Nice project man, that body color/wheel combo looks bad ***...should be a nice runner...and I feel you on the budget, when you're in collee funds are hard to come by, just make sure you get it done before you have to pay those loans back, trust me! Keep the progress coming!

Thanks for the good words everyone, my town holds a car cruise/car show for 2 days in October along with a burnout contest. That is my current goal to get it going by then. Still need a few more parts, then it's elbow grease and know how.
