4wd vs 2wd Tune?

4wd vs 2wd Tune?
I see most 4x4 conversions with the electronic trans go with a 2WD tune, but can I leave the 4wd wiring in and simply use a toggle switch when in 4Low to get the proper signal with the VSS after a manual Tcase? Or do I really need to run a 2WD tune and put the VSS before the Tcase? Im down to figuring out which transfer case and VSS location to run.

the stock GM units have a switch in the transfer case or in the push button in the dash.
It the VSS is in the transfer case output you need the switch so the PCM knows it in 4low. If its in the adapter just run the 2wd tune.
It usally cheaper just to use the stock GM vss and 4wd tune vs a adapter VSS.

You you can just run a toggle switch on the dash or make a micro switch on the transfercase shifter itself. Some of the transfer case have the switch internal as well. So all you would need to do is hook into it.

On that switch, Im guessing the wire out of the harness is negative? I have just started studying the wiring diagrams and Im not sure.

Pin 16 on red connector is 4low. The switch should provide a ground to that pin when the transfer case is in 4low .

Nice, Ill dig around there. Sounds like a cheaper solution to run the 241 with a switch than a conversion kit and my 231.

Oh Ok. So I'm looking at a 2004 chev 4x4 5.3l tune in my HP Tuners VCM editor, but I cant find any 4 lo shift tables. Shouldn't I be able to change those somewhere in the tune? Or do they not show up? Greg

Basically the 4l switch tells the trans its had lower gear ratios. So it shift right.
It should show up in HP tuners. But you will still need the switch for the trans to shift right in 4 low.

Thanks. Sounds like I can remove the wiring for the auto trac and front diff actuators....
Any suggestions on someone that can leave it tuned as 4wd with the intention of using a toggle for 4Lo?
