Default Relocating throttle body?

Has anyone done this before? The way my intake manifold sits, I would get better air flow through the intake system if I can relocate the throttle body a bit. Basically instead of having it attached to the intake manifold, I would like to have an elbow attached directly to the intake manifold and then have the throttle body attached to the other end of the elbow.

I don't see why you couldn't.. take a look at fox mustang and sn95 mustang intakes. Identical except the sn95 have an elbow

Is there an off the shelf plate that I can purchase that I could bolt to the intake manifold and build the elbow off of that. That'd save some time/work fabricating one from scratch.

Should be able to move it where you want. Just make sure to keep everything solid and don't add extra ports or anything like that. A cable driven TB would be more difficult than a DBW TB. There is an elbow that is used to run a TB on a carb. intake so (in a way) its been done already. Plus, is there any REAL difference between a TB spacer and a TB elbow?

Just make sure to keep the mass airflow sensor up wind of the TB.

Which intake are you using? I cant imagine any elbow attached between the intake and throttle body would flow better than the throttle body attached directly to the intake.

My TB will be DBW, so that'll make it easier to do.

The only reason why I am doing this is due to clearance. If I attach the TB to the intake manifold, I am going to have an extremely tight bend coming off of it to clear, which just seems like I would be losing out on quite a bit of power. I probably have 2 of room at most to work with, if the tb were attached directly to the intake manifold.

I PM'd you a link from ebay. You could drill out the threaded holes and weld an elbow to the flange.

Awesome! Was actually just on ebay trying to find these. I wasn't using the correct terms apprently, but with your link I was able to find a 102mm flange, which is what I needed!

thanks.

Just found these. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-38473/overview/

Those would work well, if something like that came in 102mm form.

The elbow off my intake was custom made. It has a 90mm Wilson ford style throttle body on it. I may have it up for sale soon as I'm changing some things around. I suspect it may not fit your application though.

You could prob weld onto a ls1 throttle body adapter if you dont feel like making a flange.

Thanks for this.

I contemplated doing just this on my '90 300zx swap for the same reasons. I was worried if it would function correctly or not; but this thread affirmed what I had thought.

Also, wouldn't the extra volume of the 'elbow' effectively increase the plenum volume, thereby possibly improving performance (or not!) ?

would having the extra air volume really increase performance? if so then that'd be awesome.

I doubt it makes a difference in my application.
Its the same size tubing as my intercooler pipe. It's also all under pressure. NA may be a different story, but I doubt it.

The LSX stuff is new to me, but I was just basing what I wrote on what I've read.

I understand that one of the claims to fame of the LS6 manifold is increased plenum volume, among other things. I would think that any increase in volume after the TB could be considered an increase to the plenum volume - and maybe it makes no diff at all

but I agree - with FI it's very likely not gonna be noticed.
