Default Fuel pumps for swaps..

What is everyone running for FUEL INJECTION fuel pumps in swaps? when I had first started looking, I was all about a cheap Walbro 255 with corvette filter/reg ( if it will suffice ) but I also see now things like aeromotives universal pump kit, along with a few others. Just curious the advantages ( other than staying cooler) to going in-tank vs external.

My project is a LQ4/4l80 in a 70 Nova. Cam only with milled heads..So not exactly fuel hungry.

Thanks guys.

Have Walbro's Intank for both of my Swaps.

Yes.. staying cooler fuel feeding is on advantage, the other 2 are less noise and longer service life. Granted many will say, these two are not an issue or that they had no problems of any kind with external, but what every works for you is the way to go.

But stay away with the CHEAP Walbro's.. as they may not be real one and a cheap knock off.

My 2 cents..

Link to the in-tank kits? Is it like the Racetronix deal? Thanks!

Running a real walbro 255 external on my corvette, intank on my Olds.
Both work great, but would prefer intank if it's possible.

A real Bosch 044 (inline) with AN inlet and outlet. It quits running intermittently so I am going with a Aeromotive A1000 soon.

I am running walbro 255 in the original intank basket, with corvette filter/regulator from Speedway. 2 1/2 years without any trouble.

Funny this topic came up, just replaced my dead walbro w/ an Aeromotive phantom pump. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AEI-11142

Honestly can't complain, the walbro lasted over 7 years but only about 10k miles. Could be a number of things that killed it, not going to say it's a bad pump at all.

Also can't say the areomotive pump makes any difference since I haven't had a chance to test drive the truck, really just got done a few hours ago and don't want to test drive at night I will say the areomotive is much more quiet. I had to turn everything off in the garage to verify it was priming.

One thing to mention that makes me wonder if all of these various pumps are made in the same place and just labled for manufactures is that both the walbro and automotive pump have the same electrical connector.

I just bought
this this
for the wagon and for the Firebird, I swapped out the pump from the one that came with the Spectra Premium GM32BFI.

The pump in the link is not a Delco unit though it is represented as such. I sent it back and picked up a genuine AC Delco EP381.

I've used several genuine AC Delco EP-381's on LS swaps...very good luck with these.

Word to the wise...I had a customer try to save a few bucks once and used an E-bay knock off 381...I don't have to tell you how that turned out...

Does anyone know if the pump that comes with the Tanks Inc set up is the good one or cheap one?

I see how guys are using in-tank setups, but without going with like a Aeromotive Stealth kit, I would have no way to attach the pump inside my tank, and run the lines out. That's where a lot of my confusion was because I have a stock Nova tank.

For the same price as just a stealth kit, I could grab a tanks inc complete setup. Now that Ive seen the tanks inc setup..Ii obviously see how to go in tank! Thanks guys.

Look at this thread or this one. I can't remember which one, but it shows how to install an in-tank fuel pump in a car that did not originally come with one.

I have seen a few guys use the stock 99-02 camaro setup since it is regulated internally and has the sending unit built in to the little anti starvation bucket. Supposedly it does not require a baffled tank, which for my 240Z should work well, same with most older carb cars. Does require tank modification though.

I'm one of those guys...factory Ls1 fuel bucket, no baffles, no issues.

My tank IS a 1974-1981 (thicker than earlier gens), I did recess the bucket so it did not hit my trunk. I suspect the 1970 nova has the shorter tank like the early f body....so without cutting a hole into the trunk, other mods would need to be done.

I'm a little off the beaten path here. I use these old external Bosch mercedes benz pumps and soft mount with vibration dampening mounts to the frame. They come in a host of early 90s mercedes vehicles. They are the same as the 044, but don't have a threaded inlet, just a push on from the tank.

That era was when Mercedes was designed by engineers vs. accountants. They are UBER high quality and reliable and pretty damned quiet (my exhaust is much louder). Just need an original one vs. aftermarket POS. I have a '92 500E (pre-AMG Porsche - built early super-sedan) and that's what it runs. 200k miles on the stock pump.

I've got 5k miles on my Gen IV L92 swap without a hiccup.

I just bought a spare here for $30 (I made an offer). http://www.ebay.com/itm/251965164988
Looks like he has one left.

Doug

Here's my pump. The OEM bracket has two. I just run one and keep the second for a spare. It is capped off.

Another shot of it after 4-link conversion.

The first external Walbro 255 I had failed after probably 40 minutes, but I suspect it may have been a knock-off, as I bought it from an online vendor for cheap. The one I currently have was purchased from Summit. So far, I have about 6 or 8 hours on it. Hope it lasts (fingers crossed).

Doug, I'm considering a Bosch 044. Porsche used them, and I don't recall any reliability issues. Is the Porsche spec 044 any different than any other 044? A local Porsche race shop says they're super reliable.

I'm running a real external walbro(with the all metal no plastic).

Honestly it's so quiet when I was at the front of the car with the pump energized and the motor off I could very faintly hear it.
