Question so who's done/doing a SBC (not ls1) into a Fox Body Mustang?

hey guys........

first time i've ever posted in this section. nice to see such a variety of projects in here. my question though is for those who have done or are in the process of doing a SBC/Fox merge. i've done the whole search thing and came up empty except for a bunch of LS1/Fox swaps. i happen to have a decent sbc ready to go so that's what i will be using. i just picked up a '90 Notch about 3 weeks ago and have not wasted any time getting the project underway. i will be using a TH400 and a 9" as well. if anyone has any tips/pointers, i'm all ears. i'll be honest and say i'm not doing much of the building myself, but would still like to know who has and if they can pass any tips on.

my parts list so far consists of.....

Fast Times Motorworks Dart block 427sbc @ 10.5:1CR
Accel Gen 7 DFI - Sequential
Dart 18* heads (unported for now)
Single plane NASCAR 053 intake
Comp solid roller cam for twin turbo setup
Shaft mount 1.70 Rockers
Throttle body adapter (Elbow) and 105mm T-Body
Coan THM 400 w/brake
Neal Chance 2pc converter setup for turbo
Aeromotive fuel system capable of supporting 2000hp n/a
Autometer instrumentation
Racecraft C/M K-member and A-arms
Strange single adjustable coilovers
175 lb springs due to the heavy iron raceblock and eventual twin turbo setup
Front and mid plates
HPM 4 bolt caster/camber plates
Flaming River manual rack and shaft setup
Bumpsteer kit
Strange Drag brakes all around
Billingsley Fab9 (setup for F-body now)
12-14 pt. C/M cage
Kirkey seats
Centerline Convo Pro 15x4's (due to low funds)
Goodyear frontrunners
M/T Drag Radial 325/50/15's
Painless Wiring kit
and a ton of misc. stuff

parts list to come.......

Strange Dbl. Adj. coilover rear moved inboard
Ladder bar setup
Wishbone or PHB setup (not sure yet)
Narrowed modified Billingsley Fab9 (originally for F'body)
Centerline Convo Pro 15x12 rear with 4" b.s.
(eventually Weld Magnum Pro's or Bogarts)

i'm hoping to get the car together and running N/A by sometime in Sept. so i can at least drive it before the year is over when it will have to be parked for the long Chicago winter. then next spring i will try to get enough $$$$ together to do the turbo setup at minimal boost levels due to the 10.5:1 CR. once that's done and i save up enough $$$$ again, i will have the motor freshened, new pistons to drop the CR to a more turbo friendly ratio, and get the heads gutted! then, i will be ready for the 1200hp/1000ft.lb. pump gas test!!! i hope to get the car down to 2700 lbs., and i will limit myself to an 8.50ET so i don't have to have a full funnycar cage. the car will have a full interior though, including a rear seat, and a mild stereo system. i did get a big jump on this project because a lot of the not vehicle specific parts i have been able to use from my scrapped Camaro project and that helped a LOT.

let me know what you guys have encountered in your endeavors if you would, and any input on mine is welcome of course.

thanks,
Dave

if you dont have headers yet, a guy local at the track used a set of 69 camaro long tubes that droppped right in with a tube k member from AJE.
the brand header, and k member might be a specific point to the swap to save a few bucks.
custom headers or fox/sbc headers get pricey.
good luck.

Default LS1 in a Fox

Hi Dave, I saw that you had Painless wiring, would you be interested in a LS1 Speed Scene Wiring harness for your swap. If so go to the online store and let me know what you need. If I can be of service, call on me.

well, i'm not sure why i would want to get rid of the painless system. i've already got it and it should work fine for my application since it's not vehicle specific. unless you can sell me on switching over, thanks anyway for the info.

hey TJ....

i'm not sure that anyone makes 18* headers specifically. i do however have a custom set of headers that were in a '71 chevelle with 18* heads. they were built to hug the block which in the next week or 2 i'll find out if they'll fit or not. the car also had a/c and p/s that they came out of. mine has neither and with the Flaming River shaft, i no longer have the big rag joint. i'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

thanks

AJE makes that SBC engine conversion k-member.

Over on www.chitownracing.com user 'xbreed' has a SBC in a 95 Mustang.

Yea I was going to say I thought "x-breed" was a sbc car, although its not a fox body, they are fairly similar. That is one sweet car though.

A real good friend of mine has done it, with great success, has gone ~9.60s with a cheap 355 and plate NOS system, Cheap Street legal (~.450 lift cam, very restrictive rules, unported heads, etc).

Total lift. Thats what the "limiting" factor for the class was, that and the heads (off of a very strict list of "acceptable" heads) could not be ported. Very impressive car for the parts it had.

nice looking notch. i bought a c/m tubular setup already without motor mounts from Behind Bars Race Cars....Racecraft is the brand though. i'll be using a front and mid plate setup on it, so this piece should work just fine. if the headers don't fit, i'll just have the turbo headers/exhaust fabricated with the turbo's in place, and then just remove the turbo's and fab an intermediate, temporary tube in their place to run it N/A for now, which was the plan anyway. i'm just hoping to do it with the headers i already have to limit initial cost, as well as not having some goofy looking turbo/non-turbo headers! things are going really slow for the moment, but hopefully the motor will be in by this weekend or next.
