Default Whats up with the AC, hope you have the answers

I'm putting a 6.0 in my 95 gmc, all the accessories will work except the ac compressor. Street and Performance tells me that the newer ac pump won't work with my truck, they claim its an all season set up and I need to buy the sanden ac compressor. I know that there is a clearance problem with the mount down low and I need to raise it for clearance. However, street and performance wants over $700 for the bracket and compressor. Can someone who has done this conversion explain it to me. Jegs has the same compressor for $269 in the polished version.
thanks

I have heard that the new pump are variable speed. Not sure if that is what S&P was getting at.

What A/C system are you running? Stock or aftermarket? I used the factory 98 Camaro compressor on my Nova, was told by Vintage Air (thats what i'm using) that the compressor was too big, and also variable displacement. It works ok, but not as good as it should. I personaly wouldn't do it again. On my 33 ford I used the Sanden compressor with a Vintage Air system, just fabbed up my own brackets, it works great. If you are running a factory system, I would consider using the original compressor, fab some brackets...I'm doing that right now, seems to be going to work, of course this will only work if your compressor is a serpentine belt type. best of luck, Eric

If you use your old compressor, I would try to mount it up high on the passerger side. I have pics of my Ford compressor on my 5.3 if I can figure out how to post pics.

I used the LSx compressor on my El Camino and kept the rest of the factory camino A/C system and it works great. I don`t see a problem doing that on your truck. If you want to use the R4 compressor and mount it high on the pass side you should look into the bracket off a 4.3L v6 s10/s15.

That's a mid 90-95 fs or s10 a/c mounting bracket. Are you using or wanting to use the new style truck compressor on your conversion. If so the truck compressor is not variable displacement and it will work fine. All you have to do is wire it up and go. I have used a couple of them in various swaps. Street and performance wants to sell you parts that they have.

01WS6/tamu has it right. The system used on the trucks ('99-'01 at least) is your standard cycling type system. I'm sure they went to a variable displacement system at some point, but not the first few years. The factory service manual is quite clear on this.

Yes, 4.3L bracket with the bottom part cut off. I used one bolt to secure it to the head, hence the reason for the other two tubular braces. The braces were spliced and welded, not sure where I got them from. Believe it or not the front to rear spacing worked out perfectly. The belt number was Goodyear Gatorback 4061090. The fixed idler next to the alternator I swapped with one from a 200? 4.6L Ford(smaller diameter) to get the belt off of the water pump. I turned the water pump outlet by heating the casting and turning the nipple with a large pipe. It's a crude set-up but it's low buck and with a little massaging it doesn't look half bad. Oh, the compressor was from a late 80's or early 90's 5.7L Caprice cop car, it had the right number of belt ribs.

Well I picked one up for $40 today. It fit my compressor, so I started mocking it up.

Ran into a snag however, since the f-body acc. are about an inch shorter than the LQ9 acc you are running. Cut down the one mount and it seems to work.

Next snag was the belt routing with the upper waterneck pointing forward rather than up. It looks like we'll be measuring for a belt. I just hope the LS waterpumps are reverse rotation! If not, I'll have to rethink the belt routing.

I'm going to keep the tensioner for now. See what happens..... /me crosses fingers

thanks!!!!!!

I just went to the local U-pull-it in town. You could modify any ac bracket from a serpentine belt setup. You'll just be cutting off more at the bottom then you would with this specific S10 bracket.

GM used this style ac bracket from 88 up to 92 in the camaro's and firebirds. Doesn't appear to have changed in the s10's until 98 (I think). Also, the minivans (Safari, Astro, etc) will work. Saw a few full sized cars (Caprice, Roadmaster) that could fit the bill as well.

5.3 Racer gets all the credit for this one. I would've never thought of that without seeing those pics. It saves me a bunch of headaches, just wish I had seen that about 3 months ago so I could be driving my car now, rather than trying to find time to work on it.... again.

thanks!
