69 Chevelle SS 6.0L
OK, I decided to start taking some pics and post the progress on my 69 Chevelle project. I've been working on the frame off resto for a couple of years and got stalled when it came to what engine to use. The car is an original SS car and I have everything except the engine. I was going to put a 396 in the car but after getting all the hassel about " are you sure it's a true SS, and numbers matching" crap I decide to go 496 stroker. Then I helped a buddy install a 6 L in his 70 Chevelle and was blown away by these new motors! He decide to go farther with his and had a 415 cu. stroker built so I bought his old, less than 6 months, motor. My motor dynoed at 454hp and 468 ft/tq. His new on is 597hp and 605 ft/tq! Anyway, we used a 700R4 in his 70 and I am trying to use the original Muncie 4 speed in mine. Sooo, on to the project. Things and going well because we've kinda done this before but we have run into a problem with the clutch setup on the 69. I have Edelbrock headers and they have an exhaust pipe right where the pivot arm of the clutch goes. This is not tap with the hammer clearance issue. The pivot arm will not work! I am looking for any ideas since I love to here from people who have already solved problems I have. I'll keep posting pics will post some of the 70 also. Jim

I'm looking to do pretty much the same swap in my 68' chevelle. I will be building a 402cu. LQ9/L92 heads and a Muncie 4spd also. What oil pan did you go with? I'll also look for answers to your problem seeing as I'll have the same issue too!

I'd convert to hydraulic. Kiesler makes a repo bell housing that should work.
Andrew covered this pretty well in his write up on his 70 GTO.

It is worth the read, he has alot of good tech in there.
Alot will apply to your build. He just replaced his BBC w an L92.

i put a 6.0 in my 69, using a switch pitch turbo 400 (old school) and was toying with a tremec 5 spd., i figured a hyd clutch was my best option if i go that way-i am using a bench seat/col shift, but couldnt use the stock linkage with the hooker headers, had to use a shiftworks setup, but not happy with it
using a floor shift with a bench seat puts the shifter to far up, exploring a lokar shifter with a bent handle, kind of like an early bench seat/4 spd deal, not sure of their "gates" though, when i want to row a couple gears, lol

Looks like the hyd clutch is the way to go. The bearing seems to be the easy part, so have figure out how to mount the cylinder with the stock pedal. My car is a 300 deluxe with the bench seat and 4 speed. I had one of these back in 72, ya I am old, and wounld like to keep it that way. Also thought about having an header guy modify the header. Got a guy about 30 mi. away who builds them. I'll keep posting.

70 Chevelle pics
Haven't made any progress on the 69 but we finished up some detail work on the 70. Here's some pics. We use the stock computer which is reprogramed by Schwanke, the engine builder. This thing is setup for E85 or flex fuel and makes quite a bit more power on staight E85. The computer is mounted in the car above the glove box. On a 70 there is plenty of room up there. The fuel pump relay and the main power relay are mounted behind the kick panel on the passenger side. We ditched the factory air and used a unit from Classic Air. The unit is good but the instructions are terrible. We use truck brackets so the compressor is stock in the stock location. We are going over for chassis dyno and final tune next week, so I'll post results. Made over 600 ft. lb. tqu on the engine dyno so we are hoping the built up 700 R4 holds up!
