msd 6010 timing accuracy
has anyone ever made a TDC mark, and used a timing light to see if what your laptop is telling you is correct-i am begining to wonder if mine is off some-im gonna find TDC, and ck it out-i am running a procharger on mine, and while it runs great, blows the tires off at will, the plugs seem to be telling me the timing is higher than what i programed-i have heard using a usb/whatever conversion cable may throw it off-my laptop uses a usb port, and i have a cable from the laptop to the msd cord-i feel their may be something to this after all

I have not tested the accuracy of my 6010 but some guys on here used the knock sensors and rigged a stock lsx computer for tuning there 6010. When the ecm was picking up knock they lowered the timing. After the timing was set the ecm was removed. I think your idea is simpler

I have set my timing to 40 degrees from 0 RPM to 8000 RPM to see if the car has a hard time cranking over. There isnt any retard set up on initial start either. Car cranks fine....dosent labor at all. I would think at 40 degrees cranking over the motor would have a hard time cranking or am I wrong? My timing does seem off.

40 degs? are you sure it downloaded that in the msd? i noticed mine would really fight it around 28 degs, i downloaded some stuff with the motor running, just to see how it acted, and could hear the motor change as it accepted it
got my TDC marked now, gonna put the dialback timing light on it today, compare with the laptop
there was one guy running e85, had 29 degs total, but he was running a procharger-what octane is e85, high 90's?
they sell it around here, but no place convient

ok, i used a postive stop, found TDC, and made a pointer-i fired it up, set my dialback timing light to what the laptop said it was, and it was dead on-one thing i noticed was with the inductive pickup, at an idle, the msd box hated it, timing would bounce around about 15 degs, looked like a windshied wiper
if i reved it up a bit, it would be steady-anyway, appears the msd box is accurate-i am using a serial port cable to a usb cable adapter, so that was a concern-tomorrow is dyno day, so i know one thing will be reading right, lol

I did load the box with no chip and I have verified the box has been locked at 40 degrees. To get your reg carb to work with E85 it needs extensive mods. Its just easier to buy one already done.....like I did. Check out e85performance.net for more info.

That is because the MSD box uses spark stabilizer at idle. Makes the engine idle smoother. That is why you see the timing moving.
40 degrees seems like way to much, especially around torque peak. Better be carefull with that.

Im running E85......not gas. With E85 and my relatively low compression, I need to add more timing. Im running 36 total.....I just tried 40 across the board to see if the car would start hard....which I thought it would.
