Default 10 Sec Street Build

Just bought a gold 98z28 roller and plan on making a street/strip car instead of cutting up my low mileage 98ss. I started cutting some of the rear seat brackets out and im wondering if anyone cut any of the metal behind the front fender out. Will it weaken this area alot cutting it flush? I will also be driving the car on the street a little.

Some people have cut it out. There was a weight reduction thread a few months back. Just search for it.

I dont know what you mean by all that just for 10s. I guess I shouldve been more clear. Im making a drag car out of this roller because I didnt want to cut up my 50,000 mile ss. The ss has 435 to the wheels and was tuned by Cartek but its stick and is not consistent at all at the track. The car also weighs 3750 with me in it plus it has a 12 bolt which weighed it down some more.

In the gold car I will be shooting for 10.00 it will mainly be a track car but would like to drive it on the street sometimes. Im just trying to make the car as light as possible while still being safe plus being alot easier on parts. I love to bracket race and have been doing it for about 10 years. Thanks, Joe

You want that 10.00 on motor, or???
I agree with you in wanting to shave weight. Shaving weight is FREE horsepower. Less weight is easier on parts. Less weight equals quicker ET's and more MPH, ALL FOR FREE!!!
Anyways, just remember any metal you cut out, WILL weaken something. How much, and enough to matter? Well, depends on the part cut out, and how much, etc... On some earlier Fox bodies I did, I would cut out teh bracing/metal behind the quarters and the door panels. Over time, with no cage, teh quarters would start to crease, but doors never did.
But up front where you are talking about, should not have any problems. I mean, it WILL weaken the structure, but more so from a point of impact situation, and just driving/racing the car, will probaly not bother anything.

As long as you leave the door bars in, or put in at least a 6 pt cage, then I say cut away sir. Remove every luxury item, and un-needed items and the accompying wie harness and go for it.

If I had a 2nd car where I didnt car about it, id cut and grind it for every inch of it's life and then start putting in chromoly parts to make it even lighter. Id just have a basic shell for the interior and leave the center consol out. Also if the HVAC is gone, then something to make sure the defogger/defroster works since in the Northeast, it IS needed.

To give the illusion of a complete car!

My old website Camaro was 3100 w/o driver with a 6 pt bar, stock k-member, a arms, brakes, and bolt-on hood. Went 10.9 on motor with an 11:1 348 cid setup that was really setup for a 150 shot.... 10.008 on 150 on a 1.38. I liked this setup so much I think I am going to build another one.

Thanks for the replys fellas. Yes I plan on running 10.00s all motor with a 408 ls2 although Jons nos setup sounds tempting lol. It is also nice to have a second car that you dont feel guilty about cutting up lol.
