Default Good advice from a ol' shool racer?

I was at work and one of the guys use to drag race all the time and he talked to me about drag racing for almost 2hrs. Well he suggested a few things and don't know if these would work on our cars or not. One of them is stalling my car just over idle and right before the green light, start pressing the gas a lil more and on green floor it. Is this a good idea or not? also suggested to run the wire that runs to the alternator and direct it inside the car and put a toggle switch. That way you could turn it off and on between each run. supposely free up 5-7hp. anyone heard of this. and don't have to recharge the battery. What do you guys think.

The launching technique has been known to work so that the converter will flash and hit the tires harder.. but, the alternator idea is retarded..

If you wait till green to floor it you're going to be about a 1/2 sec behind everyone else.
Really, you have to see what works for your particular set-up. Launching a little off idle is not bad. your converter is going to do most of the work anyways. some people can stall it higher and hook off the line. You just have to try different rpm launch techniques and see what your car likes.

Your alternator doesn't charge at WOT. So skip the toggle switch idea.

Believe it or not, that's not the first time i've heard of the alternator idea. A friend of my dads said he used to do that when he raced back in the day. It's not a significant horsepower gain but any little thing back in that day, they tried.

It may not necessarily work on modern cars, but it's no more retarded than the free mods people use today to free up a couple of horsepower.

Thats not true.

Old school cars with a mechanical fuel pump, belt driven fan, carb and a dual point distributer and a single coil took maybe 10 amps to get down the track at most so turning off the alternator didnt drop the voltage much.

Thise cars with electric fans, big fuel pumps, electric water pumps, high output ignitions, fuel injectors etc draw like 60-80 amps. You turn the alternator off and watch the voltage drop like a stone quick to 10v or less even with a big battery. That stresses everything, fuel pump slows down and ignition gets weaker. For most it wouldnt be a big deal but for me it is. As far as ET gain I would bet I could pick up some, I have a 140 amp alt with a voltblaster cranking out 16v at wide open throttle so that thing is taking some horsepower. But its a tradeoff for being to run all that stuff off a single battery in the rear and not have to charge it after every pass or worry about the voltage drop.

I pulled my belt on the dyno and gained rwhp and rwtq. I was thinking about pulling my belt in the staging lanes and making a run. What do you guys think. I have a E/water pump .
