Default Can a clogged fuel filter cause low dyno numbers?

My Z06 only has 22k miles and I didn't really think the fuel filter could be bad but today I decided to check it anyway. It was almost totally clogged. I can blow on the inlet as hard as possible and barely barely feel any air coming out the outlet side. I replaced it with a new Napa Gold and it's very free flowing. My car with just the cam and headers dynoed 387rwhp and the A/F was dead on so I doubt a fuel filter could cause the lower numbers but I thought I'd ask.

How does the car feel after the filter was replaced?

we have noticed when we buy cars many of times the fuel filters are clogged. it is actually a very noticable difference if they are clogged pretty bad. we cut them open sometimes just to see how clogged they are.

Did you read my thread on SCF about bumpin em off with the Procharged Z06? Based on that I'd say it's running better, feels pretty dang good to me. I'll know more when I get it on the dyno Tuesday.

yes, and can cause it to run lean on dyno and if no fuel gauge is used for tune it can cost an engine happened to me with the original engine.

A/F was a steady 13:1 at WOT, but they didn't monitor fuel pressure with a gauge, unless pressure can be monitored using EFI Live?

Will most definitely cause issues, maybe even need a retune to get the AF right. Clogged filter is a flow restriction, just like smaller/dirty injectors, or a weak pump. As a matter of fact, if it was that clogged, it probably took some lifespan off the pump.

Vengeance retuned it today with the new heads, but the A/F was still pretty much dead on.

Viper,

If you had fuel pressure issues it would show on the dyno. Your car holds 12.8/13.0 with ease.

Thanx for stopping by today. Your #s are getting up there with the rest of them.

Yeah, I posted this a few days ago when I found the fuel filter clogged. Thanks again for the tune the car is running great.

Don't forget that this is a filter/regulator. 58 PSI is pretty hard to test by just blowing on a filter. A pressure gauge should have been used to get an accurate pressure reading. At 22,000 miles is should not be clogged yet unless you got some really bad gas. Plus you wouldn't be a steady 12.8-13.0:1 with a restriction. Fuel filters should be change around 30,000 miles anyways so you were getting close.

Clogged filters and lines have been the cause BEFORE for carbed and EFI cars to be down big on power.

Many times its the simple things...

I dynoed my 99 Z with just a few bolton's like full exhaust, ls6 intake and lid it put down 355/365 and was 14.9 lean on the dyno. 1st thing i did was looked at the fuel filter and it was the orginal with 85,000 miles it had the factory undercoating on it. So i replaced it and it felt like a new car. Cheep fix never got it on the dyno with just bolton's because i ended up adding a cam.

To answer the question, hell yes a clogged filter can lower #'s.

To answer the question of probability, it's HIGHLY unlikely. Especially with your car only having 22K on it. I've pulled & cut open the filters on various LSX powered vehicles, at all kinds of mileages and never found one of these mystery "clogged" filters. Unless you're somehow getting junk into your gas tank, there isn't going to be anything coming through the fuel system to "clog" a fuel filter. Through my days or working in service shops, I've found this phenomenon to be more of a marketing ploy rather than it actually happening often.

And if fuel pressure & A/F are both holding strong on the dyno, you don't have any clogs anywhere.

Thanks, all I know is I absolutely could not blow any air through the inlet barb of the old filter, but the new filter I could blow through freely.
