As far as I understand you set your two step for a specific rpm. Say 2600 since my converter will foot brake that with out pushing. When you get to the pre stage you switch your two step on and then foot brake the car until the two step activates at the rpm you set it at. At that point you mash the gas pedal to the floor(while still holding the brake) since the two step is controlling your rpm's through misfires.
when you are ready to launch side step the brake and your gone.
main purpose is to build boost. Instead of having the throttle blade 1/4 open when staging you can use the two step and have the throttle 100% open to build boost.
It shouldn't be hard on your engine...........it is like a low rev limiter
Hard on your tranny.....Not extremely, but you will be putting more stress on things

Now, that doesn't mean that only a turbo car has a use for it. On an NA car it is used as a rev limiter for launch RPM control. This allows an M6 (usually triggered by the clutch pedal) car to set it, floor the throttle pedal, and dump the clutch with the gas pedal already to the floor. I bought mine originally (nitrous application) because my car pushes thru the transbrake at about 4100 RPM (I guess there isn't enough reverse line pressure or something). I set it to 4K RPM, engage it with the transbrake and floor it without worrying about rolling thru the beam.
