Default E85 users; Timing, Boost and CR..question.

I'm running 11.0:1 CR and 9psi with total timing at 19*.
I have no knock and think she can take 1 to 3 more degrees and curious to know what you guys numbers are.
CR?
Boost?
Timing?

Motor details are in my signature and I have run as much as 15 psi on 15-17* of timing. A dyno will be your best friend for your questions. If you add one degree and it picks up 20 rwhp then try another, when you get to the point it isnt picking up much more stop there.

Bingo. There is such a thing as too much timing advance, where you are getting peak cylinder pressure too soon and not really making any additonal power.

Youd don't want to completely chew up your safety margin though. If you tune right to the hairy edge, sometime you will lug the motor, overboost, maybe get some E75 from a bad blend and hear the motor-hammering ping of death. At full throttle, chances are you'll never hear it coming.

Hairy edge tunes are for people that are sponsored and can afford to lose a motor, IMO. Especially with your CR.

Just my .02.

black98ws6ta, could you give more details on your build? I'm looking at doing the same build with a third gen. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike.

I am about to do a head swap to some afr's and a vic jr with elbow and max out my d1 and would like to know everyones results on e85

Check out Supraforums.com. There really informed about running e85 with boost. Most are saying that e85 has such a high resistance to knock they can keep adding timing untill they loss power before they ever get any kind of knock or detonation. But once they do get detonation, the motor will be done. As long as your on a good load dyno like a Mustang or Dyno Dynamics, add timing till you see your tq start to drop slightly then back it off a bit. There is no generic this much boost takes this much timing. Its all gonna depend on your heads, cam, CR, intake manifold, etc... Everybodys car will be slightly different even if the setups are the same or similar.

I have seen that myself. Another example thats pretty far out was a freinds 4G63 engine. This thing had been beaten on with 20+ psi for years, and was pretty worn down, but we were trying to kill it one night and basically had it at 100% duty cycle on the fuel injectors, 21 degrees of timing, and about 21 psi. On a little sidemount intercooler. I dont think more timing in that particular case would have resulted in more power.

Thats the beauty of alcohol fuel. It absorbs a ton of heat quickly as it heads past the intake valve, and after that it burns cooler than any gasoline as well. We have had frost appear on intakes in extreme cases.

Running E-85 your octane should already be pretty good. Water/meth injection will still help increase your resistance to detonation a bit and lend some consistency. The best benifit of running water meth is that maxing out your SC will create high IAT temps, the water/meth will dramatically lower your IATs.
