The stock head gasket on an 02 LS1 is already .058 I believe, someone correct me if I am wrong and I don't believe you are going to get any thicker than that and just changing the head gasket won't yield you much to make a huge difference IMHO. If you want to affect the compression enough to make a difference then I would personally change the heads out with a set of used 317 heads and the factory gm MLS head gasket. You can pick up 317 heads pretty cheap now; I paid 500 for mine but that was a long while ago so I bet if you look hard you can find a better deal. I am going to try selling mine, but locally first if I don't use them on a firebird project me and a friend might make into a striped out race car for the track.

Do you need to get longer push rods cause of a MLS GM gasket?
If you do he should be changing them anyways as the stockers are prolly bent.
Ur best bet is the 317. Like BadgeZ28 said they have much better flow plus the cc of the head is bigger making the combined CR drop about 1 full point. So if you were 10.3 you would be 9.3 with that combo. I used them on my build and made great power at fairly low boost for a stockish engine. (just 317 heads and a small cam i got off a buddies car cause he went bigger)
I think you can get the 317's for 300ish plus shipping now from people. GL!

The stock setup is with a gasket about .054 thick. Get a MLS gasket close to that thickness and you are fine. The stock valve train is fixed. No adjustment. You swap in a thicker or thinner gasket, how do you compensate? Different length pushrods. Same for different base circle diameter camshafts and heads. It is always a good idea to check this anytime you change your setup.

Well isn't the GM MLS that everyone is talking about thicker then the stock gasket? I thought that was part of the idea. I didn't even know that there was different thicknesses of MLS from GM.
Either way he should be changing the pushrods in the car as they suck and usually are bent when ya take them out. GL
