Default 5.3 rod bolts

In the process of putting another 5.3 together and was wondering if I should pull it apart and gap the rings and put rod bolts or just run it. The motor has over 100k miles on it. On my last 5.3 I put rod bolts and gapped the rings and it blew up. I know this has been asked before I'm just looking to get some opinions. My combo is s480 turbo ls6 intake ls6 cam. Just looking for around 650 tire.

This was just covered in depth a few days ago. consensus is leave it alone with that many miles and that hp goal.

what let go?

On the stock bottom 6.0 that went 8.59 the motor had seen 30psi and lots of 24psi passes. After removal and diassembley, the retorqued stock rod bolts were still torqued and the motor looked brand new inside

Your motor could have melted a piston

Or you detonated it and broke a chunk off the top ring land...then it melted.

What did you set the top ring gap at?

it definitely detonated; it had a bunch of aluminum stuck to the plug. It was hammering like crazy when I shut it off but it was still carrying 60psi of oil preasure

I would not change the rodbolts unless pulling pistons out then I would go back with new gm bolts. The ARP will distort housing bore. Might run and set records etc that way but it's not right. The ring gap is usually ok on engines with 100k + miles. Under 80k Is a wild card.

Are the OEM rodbolts Torque To Yeild? I was under the impression they were NOT. And if not TTY, why not re use them after disassembly? The want of upgrading is another story.

reuse them, you'll bend a rod before you break a bolt
