Arrow Dyno Characteristics - Roots vs Centrifugal Superchargers

Here is a nice illustration which shows the typical Boost, HP, TQ responses from two different types of superchargers. This is a comparison between the Magnacharger (Roots type blower) and a ProCharger (centrifugal type blower). These dynos were performed on an SuperFlow engine dyno, using the exact same engine combos and tuning.

ProCharger D1 @ 10 psi boost intercooled
Magnacharger MP112 @ 10 psi boost intercooled
5.3L LSX based truck engine, with LPE cam and headers. Stock heads.
26 degrees timing, 103 octane fuel

Dramatic difference. Area under the curve is huge for the Magna.

Looks exactly like the KB on a 03 cobra vs a 03 cobra with a procharger.

Before anyone steps in with "coulda-shoulda-woulda" arguments, please just remember that this was a controlled environment lab test, with max boost and max rpm set. It really couldn't get any more accurate in terms of across the board comparisons between two types of blowers.

Notice the peak HP is identical at the same boost, same RPM. Pretty cool.

Wide powerbands for the win.

A KB would have been maybe a bit better than the Mag? Same conditions...

When are they gonna make a HIGH OUTPUT (over 700 rwhp) Roots/Twin Screw blower for LS1's finally? Like 15-20 psi on stock cubes? Would the size of the positive displacement compressor just be too big for street use?

The main limiter on the Magnacharger is the physical size of the unit. It doesn't move enough air to fill a huge stroker or run at super high rpm (8K+). I hear that Magna is currently developing a larger case unit though. The KB is a little larger, seems to be able to push more boost too.

Or, you could always slap a BDS 6-71 or 8-71 blower on your LSX

Well, that'll take care of nearly any peak numbers you want!

PLUS you could put two rear-view mirrors on the sides of that thing.

Wow, positive displacement blowers need lots of room for high outputs.

Nice comparo but that procharger graph looks like ***.I've never done a truck that follows that torque curve, ussually they are flatter and alot more down low.

Nine Ball, I'm curious as to your thoughts on a roots type supercharger on a very small engine, and the possible limitations...?

Nine I'm curious about the same thing say for instance the KB on a stock cube vs say KB on a 402/408.

I have been wondering why people pull stock sc off 03-04 cobras and put on prochhargers.Just look at prochargers site.

My bet would be the procharger would like a lot more timing everywhere, and the torque curve would be correct like you said Slowhawk. Just goes to show how poor the tune was on the procharged dyno, you cannot use the same tunes for both with the same timing. That favors the maggies a little to much. Put all of the timing to it that the procharged setup can handle and watch the maggie destroy a motor and the D1 shine. Besides its a apples to oranges comparison. I should stop here hahahaha!!!!

I've never seen a positive displacement blower with a centrifugal like boost curve, very interesting indeed. The fact that they nailed down exactly the same boost level is also interesting.
Too much octane for the ProCharger. It just wouldn't need it with the slow timing and cooler IAT.

Where was this comparison done?

I think you may need to trim your windshield with that

I agree... My setup was making 400rtwq at 3K RPM and 499rwtq at 4200RPM running only 7.5-8psi and 18 degrees of timing on pump gas. That curve for the procharger looks really bad. It looks like a turbo that never spooled at all.

Check the dyno graph your self... it shows stock vs the 8psi run from the D-1SC.

The Radix is great, its just very limited. 10lbs on the dyno graph... So if all you want is 10lbs or less its the way to go.. I'd like to see the chart with a 12-14lb pulley on the ProCharger. I wonder how much closer it would be HP & TQ at the lower RPMS and where it would pass the Radix on boost output..

Also my seat of the pants dyno says that comparo is wacky. I've riden in a few ProCharged/Vortech vehicles and they pulled as hard as some of the Radix powered vehicles. Just my .02cents... It felt like by 4k rpms it would be a toss up between the two on power anyway.

I figured all of the excuses would start flying. Like I said guys, these are just results between swapping two different blowers on the exact same engine, with the exact same boost and rpm range. The "coulda-woulda-shoulda" excuses won't change the outcome as tested and displayed here. Nobody can deny that both graphs are fairly representative of the typical boost curves and power curves generated by both TYPES of blower. This is for comparison purposes only.

Tony
