Default Patriot LQ9 Heads with 10 lbs of boost?

I called a sponsor to talk about replacing my stock block with a iron short block (346 or 408). I explained that I already have Patriot LQ9 low compression heads.

Car presently has a ATI DSIC that puts out close to 500 rwhp (493) on a Mustang dyno. I want to up the boost to 10 lbs or whatever is necessary to add another 100 rwhp (with a goal of 600 rwhp).

I thought all that was necessary to complete this build would be a short block built for boost, an upgrade from 42 lb injectors to 60's, possiblly an inline boost pump (already have a Racetronix kit), possibly better headers to replace the Jetcoats, an FMIC and a Stage 4 or 5 rebuild of my stage 1 A4.

Chassis has every part already installed to handle the extra power including a Moser rearend.

The first thing he said was that I can't use my LQ9 heads because they aren't built to handle the boost and that I would need AFR or ET heads.

What's up with that? The the reason I installed the LQ9's when I installed the ATI was that I would eventually replace the short block and use the same the heads. I'm doing the build in steps as resources are availble rather than all at once.

I was about to drop about 10-12000 with this sponsor. Now I thinking about calling someone else.

Is this correct or was I wrong to get the LQ9 heads. What are my options?

Give that guy the He's just trying to sell you some heads. LQ9s are fine for boost. I have a set I am going to put on my new motor and I will be running 15psi. A lot of boosted guys are running them no problem. Local guy is running them with a stock block, 14psi and meth inj and is making 700rwhp....

Was he saying that they would lift with 10psi? My ATI setup isn't running yet, but from what I have read on here the truck heads should be more than ok with 10psi. If your using head studs you should be alright.

use arp head studs and you will be fine. Look up at the Boosted list sticky at the top of this section, I counted 11 guys running 6.0L 317 heads all the way up to 18psi and twice that many running stock heads...

We use the Patriot LQ9 heads all the time in the 14 to 16 psi range, without any problems. We do recommend head studs for added insurance. Bob

Yes, CHRIS is right and CHRIS would know and that is the whole purpose that many guys use the LQ9 317 heads for BOOST specific appications! That guy is full of crap and just get the head studs and you will be good to go!

I plan on buying an STS turbo kit in the future, but I know that I'm limited on boost due to the stock compression. Would getting a set of LQ9 heads be a good idea? I plan on home porting them, as I am on a budget, so I'm just curious if they're worth the expenditure.

They are worth it if you find them for the right price. 317s will lower your compression about 9.6:1 and they have the LS6 intake and exhaust runners. I found mine on ebay, brand new fully assembled with new rocker arms for $200 shipped to me. They come up here for sale all the time for around $250-350.

I've been running a set of ported truck heads for a few years. They work okay if you run aftermarket head studs, and if the heads don't leak (from overporting). Mine are even epoxied from a spot where they broke through from porting.
