Question life of a stock A4 behind a procharger???

What would be the life expectancy of an A4 behind a d1sc procharger with 8 lbs of boost? The car is a 2000 SS and it has 51000 miles currently and the procharger has been on it for 1500 miles or so. It hasn't been beat on and the car was taken good care of before the procharger install.

The A4 is stock with the stock torque converter. It dynoed 497 rwhp and 487 rwtq on a dyno jet with longtubes, ported throttlebody, corsa catback, ls6 intake, and a professional (conservative) tune.

Just wondering how the tranny will hold up if a guy drives it nice and doesn't use sticky tires, etc? Can you expect a long life if it isn't bagged on or does the extra power automatically mean it will fail no matter how easy you drive it???

Short.

Power creates heat, heat kills A4s. Trans coolers delay the inevitable.

Once I went over 500 rwhp on my street car my tranny lasted about a week. Then it was slip city on that ***. It will go. Its just a matter of when.

Sure does. The first things that go are the clutch packs and power bands. My stock 4L60E lasted about 3 months when I installed a 383 making 420ish rwhp.

Another thing that helps is a deep pan. The more fluid there is, the better as the heat has moe mass to distribute over.

High revs kill A4s so keep it below 6100 with a cooler, it will last awhile.

So, if a guy keeps the revs down and doesn't drive the snot out of it then the tranny might last for a little while still?

A bit. Remember the 4L60E is pretty much a POS. There is one company, not a sponsor here though??!?!?!, that is getting the 4L60E to hold some good power even with a transbrake!!! There are a couple 800 rwhp vettes that have one installed.

Yeah, if you can stay out of boost. But if you do that then what is the purpose of being blown...

Mines stock and doing pretty well. It's all how you drive it and a little luck. Big cooler and changing fluids help. Also get a trans temp gauge and never drive it if the temp gets above 180. I've only had to pull over once to let it cool but as soon as I see the temp going up I take it easy. Mine stays about 160 most of the time. I wouldn't plan on it lasting more than a week but it could last years. Treat it right and you might get lucky, just don't count on it, have a back up plan for when it goes.

I agree, I bought a new 2000 Z28, put a P1SC/ST3500 converter on it, car ran 11.30s or so (490rwhp, no weight reduction) every weekend for a whole summer, took the blower off and bracket raced the car for another season (ran 12.40s), put it back 100% stock and drove it daily for another six months and the trans stlll worked as good as new the day I traded it in.

I didnt even have an aftermarket cooler on the car until I took the blower off

Mine lasted 3 months with P1SC @ 7psi and a transmission cooler installed, stock cam, stock heads, stock rev limit, street tires, 2.73 gears, stock converter, lighter weight (c5), never tracked, potential hardly used. I thought surely I could make it last a year or so. NOT.

IT WILL DIE!

Ignore those who still have the stock transmission. I don't doubt rufretic and kp, but I belive they are very lucky. Don't expect to be so lucky. You may be, but you probably won't. I am EXTREMELY easy on cars and drive like a granny, and mine broke with all the precautions. Hopefully yours will live like the last 2 people, but more than likely you'll end up like me. Start budgeting for a transmission now. If it doesn't fail, no harm done.

I'm not saying it wont die, plenty of them have, but if you watch your burnouts and take it easy they will last a while. I know guys that have been been bracket racing their H/C 4l60 cars for years on the original transmission, I also know guys that broke theirs with almost no power and track time. Same with stock short blocks and stock rear ends - you know they are eventually going to die but no reason not to have a little fun while it still works.

I'm still on my stock tranny, but I think it's starting to go. It's been almost 1.5yrs since I've had the blower on, so I'm pretty happy both the tranny and engine lasted this long. But, the car is no longer a daily driver, and I only drive it on the weekends when it's not raining/snowing. I've never been to the track either and I don't have sticky tires. I'll romp on it good a couple times on the street, but I also don't try to race everything in site either.

Well, it sounds like some have good luck and some have bad luck. Pray for the best I guess, for a little while at least.
