Default my sts setup is too loud!!1 advice pleasee

when i first bolted on the turbo i had a stock Y pipe with cats.. the turbo sounded pretty good, and the exhaust was still pretty calm

then i removed the cats and it got alittle on the loud side...

i just finished rebuilding and beefing up the engine, its wayyy louder.. so i added a magnaflow strait flow style muffler which helped somewhat... then i wrapped everythhing..

ive noticed just about every sts turbo guy on here has no mufflers or anything.. what you guys recommend to quiet it down alittle more?????

im almost considering putting some cats back on the Y pipe??

Oval XR1 after the turbo on mine.

Tucks up out of sight between the 90 degree bend and the bumper.

i know exactly what you are talking about...

i had headers and y pipe on the car b4 i went to stock manifolds and with the headers the car was soo quiet compared to the manifolds for some odd reason.i also dont have cats either and i put a magnaflow staight muffler after the turbo also but its just not doing it for me, i get a head ache and dont feel like driving the fregin car....i talked to a guy at sts and he said get rid of the muffler and get high flow cats from gm he said that hes running them and the car sounds great and you dont lose the whistle when putting a muffler after the turbo...

i thinkin right now on betting a pair of high flow cats and putting them on the y pipe.. either those or the 1 chamber flowmasters.. but that prolly wont even quiet anything

It's a pretty big risk but some people get away with it. Personally I tell everyone to remove the cats. at all costs unless they strictly can't due to emmissions or whatever. What's the cost of a new turbo and the swap time v.s. a little more noise.

As for the noise having a modded car and sound is really the nature of the beast. That's similar to wanting a full out race car but not wanting to spend that much, use it as a DD, and it to be quiet as a Camry.

But to each their own!

DO NOT RUN CATS! If you want to put something before the turbo put a bullet muffler of some sort. Honestly i dont think you need anything, the sts setup is fairly tame. Although i usually drive around with guy that have cutouts and bigger overlap cams.

I put an XR-1 oval at the back. Really toned down that annoying "I am a high-schooler, hear my exhaust" noise.

I would honestly be afraid of putting cats or anything in front of the turbo...what if a small piece of a baffle from a muffler breaks off, ur screwed.

1. Dynomat the interior and drive w/ the windows up.
2. Wear earplugs

Seriously, I have an STS, dump pipe, LT's, H/C car and honestly, it isn't any louder than most H/C cars w/ longtubes. Just my $0.02

loll honestly im not afraid of nice high flow cats breaking into peices and going through my turbo.. cops are becoming a real problem around here, and having a screaming car dosent help.. also when i start my car at 630 am i dont think the neighborhood likes it too much.. also having tons of noise when you drive makes the car seem cheap...

when i had the factory cats on and a stock engine, i loved hearing basically only the turbo spooling all day long.. i am about to dynomat the ENTIRE car, ive read great things about the benifit.

im looking into putting a pair of those flowmaster 1 chambers on my Y pipe.. plus the magnaflow strait though muffler i have before the turbo... or cats... bahhh what to do
