Default STS Turbo system Intake question

I have a STS Rear mount turbo,

i was wondering if anyone has ever used exhaust wrap on their intake pipe to keep the IAT down under the hood.

when the car is running it heatsoaks the intake pipe under the hood, but when i touch the intake pipe that is running along the side of the car to the rear mount its just warm, not hot like the under hood intake pipe.

if i was to wrap that would it help keep the IAT down somewhat?

any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

It might. Wouldn't take too much wrap to give it a try.

The 2x biggest "heaters" for the cold side piping are where it comes close to the driver side Y-pipe (even closer if running LT's and cats) and where it crosses over the power steering cooler just before the throttle body. If you only wrapped those areas with heat-reflective material, it should help.

yea log your iats at idle and wot and then wrap it and do it again let us know what you find out because i was thinkging of doing that to! but i have no way of knowing since i have no logging software. i noticed you do so give it a shot! it has to help it lower because that sob gets smokin hot. if it is a noticable diff i will do mine right away.

When I had mid lenths on mine I used thermo refect tape on the bottom of the car next to the header it help some but the weirdest thing was the turbo blanket way lower at idle around 10 degrees lower. Oh the wrap would help allso but im going to try thermo sleeves they use on millitary blowers

i think the turbo blanket stoped the heat soak to the compressor housing and surrounding charge pipe if in the area, makes perfect since at least i think

i did wrap 80% of my exhaust with wrap.

and got heat reflective tape to put around the intake under the hood i will take it for a drive tonite and see how it does.

im sure the turbo will run warmer (spool nicer) and IAT should be down a bit.

but i will update you guys.

its hard to say exactly but this is so far what i have found.

the underhood temp is cooler due to the exhaust wrap.
definately worth it!

and the intake is not getting nearly as heatsoaked
i can leave the car idle for a long time and the temp stays really consistent.
before on a medium temp afternoon my IAT would hit 122F at idle when at a light.

tonight the most i saw was IAT of 108F
granted it is a bit cooler tonight but so far im convinced that it was a very smart choise.

the turbo was spooling really nice. sounds really nice even under normal driving conditions.
the tailpile is alot hotter due to the wrap, guess this means the turbo should be a bit quicker to spool / boost.

Question do you have a intercooler? If so did you cut out the bumper and replace that grill on there that would drop your intake temps a hole lot!
