So on a full tank fill up I am getting about 180 miles out of the tank. I'm going through all the procedures and have cleaned the air filter and added tire pressure to near 40 psi. I still have yet to clean the MAF and replace the plugs and check for vacuum leaks but also have the fuel system to check out. So what basically signifies the fuel filter is going bad?

The car was sitting for awhile before I bought it and there's about 42k miles on the car. I've had it for about 4 months and thought there was something wrong with the MPG and now am finally looking into it

It is one of the cheepest things to do I say just replace it. I am sure a cloged one will put wear and tear on the pump and give poor mpg

Its cheap and easy to replace. I would do it regardless.

any specific filter preferred over another? or is there no real difference here?

I've always replaced them with AC Delco. Doubt there is much difference between brands.

go with a AC Delco in my opinion. Also just for kicks when you get the old filter off wipe it clean and try blowing through it and compare to your new one, you'd be surprised how restricted they get and the vehicle still runs.

Check out install university they have two nice write ups on this. This is on my list of things to get done here in the near future. I went with the AC Delco filter as well because all the other ones I see are made in China. I'm not trusting my engine to some Chinese factory worker and their wonderful quality controls (Anyone remember lead paint on kids toys or antifreeze in toothpaste?). If you can't find the AC Delco one in stores it can be found online pretty easy. For me it was worth the wait to order it.

That fabulous-shade-of-green oxygenated fuel that you
are allowed to buy, is lower energy content than good
gasoline. My MPG took a hit when everybody around
here started with the 10% ethanol.

Cammed, converter-ed, geared and generally hopped up
all around, I never see north of 150 miles a tank unless
it's a whole lot of highway.
