I have done this in a vert, in fact this weekend. My buddy has an 02 Z/28 vert that the fuel pump went out in. That location on the web link is the same place I cut. I used a pneumatic cut-off wheel, took me about 15 mins. Put the top up and pull the carpet up, there will be two body plugs, use those as reference points to center up, we made the cut pretty much dead-center of those two body plugs, on the upper part of the trunk body, before it goes down into the trunk well.

I need to drop my tank to install my cage, but I'm going to be cutting a door at the same time. My friend has this really nice polished cover that works well. It's riveted it place and seeled with silicon between the metal. I'd suggest getting something like that to truely seal it off once you cut.

Here's how I did mine on an '01. I just used a fiberglass wheel on a dremel, took about 5 minutes. I made a new, slightly oversized panel to cover things up and painted it the same color as original.

Love it. I see the pump location for a 98 and an 01. It looks to me that the pump location is a little different for the two years. My car is a 2000 and I would assume the pump location would match that of the 01 but I'd sure like to know before I start cutting. Also, I saw in a different place that there is about 3/4" space for the cutting blade. This correct? If it is, plenty of room.

WARNING: You will see in my photos that there one of the fuel lines and the electrical harness is VERY clost to the surface of the cutting area. Luckily I went very slow and was very careful. I managed to get it all cut with only one superficial nick on the outer jacket of the electrical harness. I used the cutting wheel and a screwdriver. I used the wheel to cut until there was just a breath of metal left then I finished the separation with the screw driver by pulling it along the cut. It took some time, but I think it was the safest thing to do. WARNING: Remember to use a flat file to clean the edges of your new tap door opening. After cutting you can have very sharp edges that can become a real problem. I only bled myself once. I hooked up the stock wiring harness and started the car. It all seems to work fine. To create the trap door cover, I went to Home Depot and picked up a 12x18 sheet of aluminum for $5. Rather than screw it into the deck I decided to use the plate I cut out as a place holder. I then put a little weather striping around the attached panel and again around the outside edge of the aluminum panel. With the attached (cut out) panel acting as a place holder I placed the aluminum panel over the opening and the carpet will keep it all in place.
I purchase the replacement Racetronix wiring harness to complete the project but I haven't tried to install it yet. Question: Does anyone know if the Racetronix wiring harness can be install without dropping the tank? I was hoping to find a way to fish the harness behind the tank with it in place, but it sure doesn't look like there's enough room. I was considering unbolting the tank but not remove it just to see if I could get an inch or two more clearance. Anyone try this?
Sorry no photos.... I tried to upload some but the system keeps telling my they exceed the limit. The photos are only 150k .jpg files. Not sure what's wrong. I'll try again later.

Couldn't you take the Racetronix harness from the rear through your trap door, tie a metal clothes hanger to the front of the harness, feed the hanger through the trap door and over the top of the tank, then get under the car and grab the hanger (should droop down in front of the tank) and start pulling slowly untill you get the harness? You will probably need someone to help feed the line in on the top (should probably tape up the sharp edges of the trap door hole) as you pull from underneath.
