Question Should I get a 12 Bolt

I have a 2000 SS A4 Camaro. My mods for summer are ram/cold air, heads and cam, underdrive pulleys, tc, tranny cooler, and maby one or 2 more things. My question is should i beef up my 10 bolt or just cut off a couple mods and get the 12 bolt?

Auto = 12bolt. M6 = 9".

Do you do a lot of dragstrip racing or just cruising?

With an A4 you can get away with a 10 bolt longer because the launches aren't such a shock to the rear end. But if you are gonna be hitting up the track every week, it's something to consider...I think if I were you I'd start putting away for a 12 bolt, and replace the 10 when it breaks, leaving the 'building up' of the 10 bolt out of the question. Who knows you might be able to take the 10 bolt further than you think...just don't count on it.

IMO, on an A4 car making less than 400 rwhp a 12 bolt is a total waste of $$$. I personally would never waste $ on a 12 bolt on an auto car that was making anything less than 600 rwtq, especially if you get some tires with some sidewall. 12 bolts are exspensive! if you have one of these rare occurances where it does break on your car, then replace the differntial or ring and pinion (which ever one goes) they are cheap these days. sometimes u can pick up a perfectly fine 10 bolt for less than $300

Just give it a rebuild don't try and beef it up. New bearings,races, seals etc and a solid pinion spacer and the 10-bolt will last many miles just cruising around. Now, if you start hitting it hard with sticky tires....

When you factor in shipping cost, I am actually selling Moser 9 inch rears for less money than the Moser 12 bolts. I agree, go with the 9 inch. The 9 inch will be there for what ever modding you do in the future. Bob

how many passes down the track do you have? both in an A4 and an M6 car? I've had over 500 passes in my A4 camaro, never had 1 single problem (less than 400 rwhp) I made 250 + passes in my m6 TA before the differential in the 10 bolt broke, fixed the diff, made another 50 + passes with over 500 ft lbs of torque till it broke, then another 100+ passes after that. I then got a 12 bolt and have 50+ passes with over 600 ft lbs of trq hasn't had one single problem.

all i'm trying to say is that you can get away with a lot outta you 10 bolt if you have an A4.

most people that drive fbodys aren't rich, therefore $ is definitely important to them, and its no good to make them think that they have to spend $2000+ on a rear end when they don't need it. Yes, absolutely there comes a time when its necessary, but its not when you are making 400 rwhp 400 rwtq or less, which is probably what he will make with his heads and cam package.

I don't know about you but I've been going to the drag races since the late "50's, so I think I might be considered a seasoned racer. Anyway the only way a M6 10 bolt will survive is if you are feathering the clutch off the line and or leaving the line at <2,000 rpm, with street tires. Drag radials, ET streets and slicks will destroy a 10 bolt in short order. More importantly the performance would not be optimized.Dumping the clutch at 3,500-4,000+ rpm is what gets the job done.

Some 10 bolts hold up and some don't. With what you are doing, go with your 10 bolt untill it breaks, then go with a new rearend. 9" vs 12 bolt is like Camaro vs Trans Am.
