Knocking noises from what seems like tranny output shaft/ds connection...
So I bought an aluminum driveshaft and a built tranny (4l60E) from a couple guys on here. I put them in this weekend and I go for a test drive and I am getting a really nasty sounding knocking kind of noise when in gear. Not all the time and not in all gears. When I am on it 50% throttle no noise... Its mainly when I am turning or stopping and ever few seconds when I am sitting still. But when I shift to neutral or park, no noises. Converter locks up ok. I am thinking its the DS. I got underneath and shook on some things and it seems like the slipover connection for the DS over the tranny output shaft is loose or something. It moves just slightly. And I mean slightly..... Could this be causing the noises I am hearing??? The noise is coming from directly below the shifter **** (checked from inside and outside the car)....
Please give me some insight!

U-joints, tailshaft bushing, damaged tailhousing?
Where is the play and what moves with what, or
independently?
Driveshaft may interfere with exhaust under some
suspension deflections; I had one time I was getting
a bang only on braking when the car would squat
and make one of the balance weights hit the I-pipe.
Anywhere you have < 1" or so of exhaust to
driveshaft clearance, check it twice.

It seems like the fitting where the driveshaft slides of the tailshaft of the tranny is whats loose.... it just has a tiny bit of play. isnt it supposed to be completely tight fitting? Just loose enough to slip over? I checked all clearances and everything is good... Plus its more a harsh type of sound.... you can feel it all the way up through the shift cable and hear it very clearly even inside the car.

This started happening as soon as I started it. I torqued the TC bolts to spec 46 lbs. How could they have backed out in the first five minutes? The connection on the tailshaft is definitely loose. I am not imagining it. I was just wondering if anyone had experienced anything like that before with the splines....

i have had the same prob. or noise for a while now. I just built my tranny bulletproof and with a shift kit and now it is way more evident....THE REAR END GEARS ARE WORN............replace them. Plain and simple... the pinion bearing is most likely worn out and there could be "slack" in the gears. Replace them and see what happens. I am doing mine this weekend.
