Default The 10-bolt Howl

Ok , so now I have paid the best professionals in Shreveport over $1000.00 to replace everything in the third member except the ring & pinion gear. I provided all the new bearings & seals including Superior axle shafts so basically it's just for their labor. Problem is the son of a bitch still howls like a banshee & they swear they checked & rechecked everything in that mother two & three times & everything is set up to specs. What the **** now ?

Damn that's a lot of money to put into a 10 bolt... Did they replace the pinion bearing? Mine's howling right now but a shop wants $500 to fix it, that's not worth it imo for a time bomb.

If I am reading this correctly you did not replace the ring and pinion, which could be exactly where the noise is originating from. Once gears get worn in, there is very little you can do to get the noise out of them. It sounds like you paid over $1,000.00 in labor on a lowly, pathetic 10 bolt. Bob

Yeah , that's right , cause we thought it was just the outer bearings but as it turned out the axle ends were chewed up so they replaced every thing except the ring & pinion. They said it looked fine , wasn't worn or blue or anything but then they said , well , maybe I should try replacing them but they couldn't guarantee that would stop the howling. So **** after all that money I figured , cut bait and let that ****** howl till I can sell the son of a bitch.

What are they professionals at doing? May I ask? Seriously. Is this all they do is differentials? If they do everything...then that might be a problem too. FIND a specialist in the parts you need done. If you have a engine ...go to a engine rebuild shop and if possible ones that speicalize in the type you have A Ls1 engine I would not take to a older hot rod shop. Right?

Places that do all kinds of stuff are general mechanics. They know enough just to get themselves in too deep. I wish I was closer to help you out with the diff. This is all we do ...GM differentials.

The gentleman that stated 'once the ring gear is worn into a pattern that is it' was right on the money. If you change the way the ring and pinion mesh or the pattern was worn in wrong because of failed bearings, etc. then the gears set is compromised and will never be what it was. It may look fine but the way the gear ingages and exits the mesh will be the problem. It will create the harmonics you are here in a whine, howl etc. Usually the top edge of the gear will cause the problem in the noise. You can set up a ring and pinion off pretty far and it will still work and probably work for a good long time. BUT to get it right on -where it performs noise free and will take the most punishment for power output is a small window of shimming. I feel bad that all that work you paid for did not solve the problem. Think if you would have spent another 179.00ish for a new set. The problem would probably be gone or at least they would have hopefully warrentied it because it was all new parts.

Hope life gets better for you. Take care. Jim

Well Monday the local Chevy dealership ( CHEVY LAND ) will be going through the rear end to see if they can find/fix the friggin noise. Even though I had all the bearings replaced we didn't replace the race's. Could that be the problem? Hell I couldn't sell the ****** the way it is now anyway. I have my jar of vasoline ready! Not very optimistic am I ?

Like the MAN said, " If you want something that will hold together & not break then get ready for a lot of gear whine ".
You can't have it both ways with a Chevy ! !
When it comes to General Motors vehicles weak & whiney rear ends are the norm. Except for the Z06.
Thats the rear end the new Camaro needs !

Well , it's gonna take the whole jar of vasoline. Chevy land called today. They are gonna have to replace all the bearings & seals plus a new ring & pinion gear. Total cost , "GULP" $ 1978.00 . The ring gear & pinion alone is $910.00. May God bless General Motors !
