The 6 speed cars get excellent gas mileage, the downside being they like to break rear ends if you plan on taking it to the dragstrip.
Autos get not as good mileage, but nothing outrageous. Normally I average 18-20 mpg in a mix of city and highway. On long highway trips I'll average 25 mpg.
Of course, all this goes out the window if you drive like a madman. With lots of WOT runs and spirited driving you'll struggle to keep your mpgs in the teens.

On the highway I'll pull 30 mpg averaging around 75 to 80 mph. (CA.)
Around town, around 18 mpg.
I've done all the "free mods" to the intake system plus the coolant bypass, de screened MAF and an SLP 2 exhaust system.
Most of my hard earned bucks goes into the suspension system.

I have an auto and I never let my rpm's get above 2000 unless I'm on the interstate doing 70-72, then they're around 2100. I get killer mileage, or at least I think, I came from an F250 with like 8-10mpg to this. It cost me $115 to fill it up and I had to do it twice a week. Now it cost me $50 a week. I have an air lid, smooth bellow, and SLP Dual Dual on my WS6, I'm putting long tubes and ORY on this month and deleting the E.G.R and AIR so we'll see if my car takes a mileage hit

I literally think you can find a few dozen 5+ page threads via search with this very topic. I hate these threads because you will literally find almost any claim you can think of. Sure you can get 28+mpg highway but who drives 100% highway and that slow to really get that? I think a realistic number for a bolt on f-body with maintanance in check driving a mix of hwy and city is 20mpg.... I struggle to get 17 but i drive mostly city.
edit: Oh and if your going for MPG and you drive highway, the M6 is a must.

2001 Camaro SS 6-speed mechanically bone stock with 3.43 rear. My 50-ish mile round trip commute is a balanced mix of all types of driving. I range 22.5-23.5 mpg without even trying. If I really pay attention to what I am doing I can break 24 mpg pretty easily.
