Default DIY electric cut out

Has anyone tried making their own E-Cut out?

With all the great parts that McMaster Carr and Granger have, I would of thought that someone did this by now.

I wonder if the DBW Throttle body would work, lol... It can take the heat of the engine bay, I wonder if it would hold up as a E-Cutout?!

The collectors on my LT are 3.5" and the standard TB seems to be 90mm / 3.54"... Hmmm....

I wonder which TB would be better suited for this type of mod. I would think the LS2 since everything is encased in metal, but that's just a guess.

90mm Truck -

90mm LS2 -

I liked the idea so I did a google search and found this.

sounds like it worked for about a week before it died.

Hmmm.... that sux, but that TB does seem like it has a lot of plastic on it and not as well constructed as the truck or LS2 TB, don't you think? Our TB looks more durable, but you know looks and all

It still might be worth trying if you have a spare TB laying around that you don't care about but I wouldn't want to spend much money on it.

Yeah, if I can find two at a decent price, this might be a viable option. I just wonder, out of all the DBW TB, which is the more robust.

I'm pretty sure they have plastic gears in them. The cable TB sounds like a promising idea.

P.S.- you're welcome?

It's not electric but it looks like a good cheap option.

You could buy a $70 ebay universal 90mm TB and still be under $100.

Well I'm not the first to come up with this idea, lol...

This first guy used an LS1 cable driven TB, a Camaro window motor and Camaro window switch, lol...

I wonder if a TPI or LT1 TB would work for something like this, even though they're dual bladed. I think it would work as a "low profile" cut out.

Been playing around a bit, looking for faster actuation
and something that won't wear out.

I found that a solenoid open, spring closed gizmo is
not stout enough to keep the plate from rattling. I
have not gotten around to trying solenoid-closed,
spring open.

Got a high torque RC servo coming, to try that out.

All reusing the McCord plate, but I also have a few
others (they break, people throw them out) all
basically the same.

I may one day get around to the vacuum operated
concept, or maybe exhaust back pressure actuated.
Got a box full of vacuum biscuits for that.

But there's a lot to be said for the simplicity of a
mechanical cable setup.

So no one has an opinion on the use of the TPI or LT1 oval dual blade TBs?

Not just sticking with GM, does anyone know what the biggest cable driven TB is? A 90mm would work for me, but the LS2 and Truck (I assume the Trailblazer SS) TB are all DBW.

It would work but wouldn't flow much. The area of the twin 48mm blades is only 3619mm, the area of a 90mm throttle body is 6362mm. It would be about the same as having a 2 5/8" cut out. A LS1 or cable operated truck TB would be close to 3" so that would make a good cheap TB to use.

I have a buddy at work who made his own with a continuous duty solenoid. So it opens and closes super fast. I will ask about his setup tomorrow but he has been using it for awhile now says it works good.
