Default WIX or Fram oil filters? why or why not?

Now I have read before that Fram filters should not be used and that WIX(napa gold filter's) are better, and the Fram oil filters have a cheap quality to them or something. Now my dad has never had a problem with using Fram oil filters, but i've been told not to run them but I've never really been explained why. I switched to a Napa Gold filter for my last oil change and primed the filter and all. I was told my my cousins dad that Frams the best and that he used the WIX oil filters in his old dodge pickup and it would always made it knock and starve of oil. Now why could that have been? He said he's always primed his oil filters. Which oil filter should I be using? I have a 1996 firebird Formula.

Just go with an ac delco filter or k&n if you can afford it. The problems people were having with the fram filters was the bypass would stick open and it would not filter and just cycle unfiltered oil back through the motor

Wix, definitely. Fram is good for the big chunks if you grenade your engine (not really - but Wix does a better job of filtering.)

I have always ran a K&N or Mobil 1 oil filter (same filter basically - you will see in the link provided by other poster).

Been running K&N or Mobil 1 filter and Mobil 1 10W 30 for over ten years and ever since my first oil change. She purrs with 96K. Just did a change today and went with the K&N filter for like three years in a row now (love that nut!).

It's like a dollar more for an AC Delco filter so why buy Fram if you have doubts? I've also heard bad things about them years ago and stopped using them. I only use AC now.

According to the above link it looks like Purolator PureOne is the best, with Bosch and Mobil 1 close behind. Maybe they are worth the extra $6 or so

Puro-Pure One

or

AC Delco

If you change your oil every 3,000, no other filter is going to do anything better, no matter how much money you spend on it.

PepBoys or Advance Auto ALWAYS has a special for like $14.00 that includes 5 qrts of oil and a Purolator filter. When they are out of the Puro they always give me an AC Delco or a Puro-Pure One in its place.

I believe if you read that link above, it will tell you that the Fram TG filter (its grey) is not that bad. In fact it is better than the AC delco filters now. If I remember right. I buy the TG now and the back flow valve works great. The regular ones were junk after 3K miles. I always knew when it went back in my lease truck cause it would tick for ever on cold start. I think Wix are really good too if I remember right. Been a while since I read that link.

The most benificial thing on that link is the list of clone filters. Since there are only a couple of manufacturers you can get the same filter but get charged drastically different prices based on what color the can is painted.

My favorite filters when I was near an advance auto was their store brand Advance Auto filters. They had a 100% textured finish and were purolater filters. I bought them for everything, but the SS and I splurged and bought pure-one for it.
