Default How much can bad 02 sensors affect my car??

My 2000 SS is throwing a code for a bad 02 sensor. My car is full bolt ons, geared and cammed. I went to the track a couple weeks ago and only trapped 109 . I was having problems with my clutch sticking and feeling mushy but it didnt stick during that run. I replaced my master and most of the sticking problems seemed to go away. I was wondering if the 02 sensors could take away from my trap speed by a few mph. The car sometimes has a weird idle but other than that, it feels like it runs pretty good. Itd be nice to know that that is my problem. Any input is greatly appreciated

I'm not sure how much it would throw off the MPH, but under WOT, I *think* the PCM is is in open loop and not looking at the 02 sensor readings. However I could be wrong and I got the egr system and 02 sensors confussed with the earlier GM OBDII computer systems.

Either way, it's a $40 part from rockauto.com. Change them if it's throwing a code!

If you really have a bad 02 sensor.....you're lucky it didn't literally shave off 30 mph. Its terrible to run your engine at WOT if you have failing or failed 02 sensors. You should fix it and NOT drive it.

Don't go nuts trying to figure out which ones to get.....Denso is the only smart choice. And just get the ones with the longest wires for any position, then zip-tie the extra wire to the frame.

I think its Part #2344087.

rockauto.com is a great place......Amazon has them also, same price pretty much but also has 1-2 day shipping usually included for no extra cost.

Really? Wow well that would be a big relief if my problem was just an o2 sensor. Ill get right on replacing them and let you know the results.. Thanks

PCM ignores O2 sensors at WOT (open loop).

Correct! But anything less and he's probably dumping more fuel than needed.

O2's are overlooked far to often.

I suggest gettng a scan with a real OBDII scanner....see how the 02 sensors are switching while the engine is running. Before spending money and time.

what was the "bad 02 sensor" code.... I know it wasnt "replace 02 sensor" Was it a heater circuit code? was is a lean code? was it a rich code? was it a slow response code? your 02 sensor it probably fine, and is probably giving information on how your engine is running.

ummmm... i guess no one is going to suggest just trying to clean the o2 sensors lol Just saying since very seldom do o2 sensors actually NEED replacing, short of catastrophic damage. Bad/dirty o2 sensors will impact overall performance and efficiency (minus WOT), not really sure by how much. But a simple cleaning might solve the problem.

Good catch man, Whats 98 is pointing out here is what O2 code did you get because some codes are the sensors job others are its internal failure.

The chances of losing both sides (both 02 sensors) at the same time is pretty remote, so there may be another problem. You can always return the new 02 sensors.

You need to get a scan with a real OBDII scanner.....

low 13's. i dont know if it was my clutch slipping or the 02 sensors... or i just noticed today on my fuel pressure gauge that it drops 10 psi at WOT after 3k rpms

well that rules out the fuel pressure issue. I just read this thread https://ls1tech.com/forums/generatio...ot-normal.html and that is exactly what is happening with me. Everyone is saying its normal. I still dont know how to diagnose my o2 sensor problems either. Can i have my tuner delete the codes or something?? HELPPP
