Default Power steering pump whines...

2000 camaro ss

My power steering started to whine slightly and i noticed fluid was all over my alternator. Noticed my high pressure side was leaking, so i replaced that and all was well. Drove for another 500 miles and it whines REALLY REALLY loudly.

-Whines at idle, with the wheel straight
-Whines heavily while turning in either direction
-When im driving, the higher the rpm's the louder the whine gets
-New serpentine belt, helped a little bit since my old one has seen better days
-Bleed the power steering system by jacking up the front end and moving the steering wheel back and forth.

Im starting to believe the problem is either my power steering pump or a bad A/c pulley

Any suggestions?

Drain and refill with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF OR GM Dex 6 ATF and it should be quiet again.

Well then it needs a new pump, don't bother trying a rebuilt pump. I seen new pumps on fleabay for 200.

Please never use stop leak!!! Get a reman or if you insist a brand new one can be had for around $200 without ebay crooks

Sorry no links apparently mods don't like that

Mods don't take kindly to new people showing up and feel the need to post in violation of site rules.

I was hoping the problem wouldn't be the pump but that seems to be the issue. Seems there's some internal seal letting air in the system since i replaced all the seals i could when i replaced the high pressure line. The higher the rpms the louder the pump whines which seems like an in your face sign its bad.

I have heard bad things about remanufactured pumps, i think new is the way to go. Ill look around and see if i can find some good prices, thanks guys

Lots of folks have had bad luck with over-the-counter remans.

One option would be to send your pump to TurnOne. Even they don't list it on their site, the will do a factory spec rebuild if you don't wantt the performance option. They also have other goodies like an upgraded pulley.
