Default Break Pads

I have a 1998 z28 and I have not changed my pads since I have owned the car which is about 5 years now. The car still stops great. Just wondering if i am due for new ones or what is the sign that I need new ones. Thanks

Basicaly the general rule of thumb is if the shoe has the same width as the amout of pad left its time to change them. I here hawk pads are good

You can't really go by age. My '98 has stock pads too, but it's very low mileage. If you do basically all highway driving, then even high mileage won't necessarily mean much.

For regular street use I like stock GM pads the best. Less dusting than most aftermarket pads.

well if there making a squiling sound is one way if your brake fluied seems low and you know you dont got a leak. or a good way is look up see what the thickness should be and measure them. or if the got cracks.

Whatever you do don't replace them with any brake pads from AutoZone. Made that mistake, they squeal like hell and the dust is horrible.

Yup sure did, used the blue spray on kind. Thought I didn't break the pads in correctly so took them out after about 1,800 miles, sanded them alittle, reapplied more anti-sqeek stuff and still do the same thing. Point being the AutoZone pads are JUNK, get the Hawk HPS's and you won't regret it like I did.

As was said, pop the wheel off and take a look through the keyway to see how much pad you have left. If it has been a while, you could also pull the caliper off and check the pads for even wear. They should wear evenly not like this [/ or like this [\ if you are looking at them on edge.
