Default Engine With Non-Rotating Crankshaft

I was in my ASEP class today and my instructor told us all to find information on a running engine that has a crankshaft, internal combustion, etc. but the crankshaft does not rotate. Only thing I could really think of was solenoid powered pistons that are mounted onto the crank just as a support.

Any ideas or sources where I can find information on this engine?

Thanks!

Right words but wrong type. You meant to say Wankle but Rotary is correct!
The cylinders revolve around the crankshaft.

Yea, I was thinking Wankel but the reason I went with a radial is that I think the shaft in the Wankel isn't called a crankshaft and it doesn't look like a crank either.

Holy Sh.. Thank you! This is exactly what I was looking for! Nice... I wonder what kind of power this type of engine would put out compared to an everyday internal combustion engine. What sort of volumetric efficiency would this have?

Thanks again!

it is more efficient in the less friction higher RPM field pretty much has no limitation to it ability to rotate at high speed as long as it remains balanced within tolerances...This is what every helicopter over your head has powering it..So keep that in mind next time you hear one swarp over top of you...

I don't know where you come from, but every one of the helo's under my charge are powered by jet turbines. This includes the UH-60 Blackhawk (T-700 turbine), CH-47 Chinook (712 or 714 turbine), AH-64 Apache / Longbow (T-700 turbine), OH-58 A/C/Delta Kiowa and the TH-67's (Rolls Royce turbine). As well- the Russian MI-17 we are using in Afganistan has a jet turbine powerplant.
Even the 45-50 yr old Medivac UH-1 (Hueys) have turbines. No helicopter I'm familiar with has used this engine design since the early to mid 1950's
