Default California, headers, cam, and smog....???

Hey Guys,
So this is my first cheby!! Well not really I bought a tahoe with blown head gasket and turn around and sold it in a couple of months.
Anyways, my girlfriend and I own 98 z28 6spd. It came with Pacesetter long tubes and SLP exhaust, no cats, and o2 eliminators. It was a good deal and part of the deal was I need to do the smog. We got all the stock stuff with the car.
I'm wondering why are the long tube not CAL legal beside not having o2 in them, I was going to drill and weld o2 bungs and fab up a removeable Y pipe with the cats. Have some of you guys made long tube headers work in California with smog?
Also down the line I want to do a cam and was wondering what mild cam that will give it some lope will pass smog?
Thanks

pretty much they are not legal b/c they move the location of the cats. there is no way around it and you have to either run stock manifolds or shorty headers to pass smog.

my advice would be to ask around in your local car club for any "passive" shops or just swap all the stock stuff back in for the test.

Technically they are illegal in all 50 sates because they move the cats from their original location further down the exhaust track.

I was told I would pass with a cam, just not if I ran any headers without a carb cert. and from what I have been told nothing past shorties has that...

Technically speaking, it is illegal to remove or modify any original equipement (smog equipement included) that does not have a C.A.R.B. or DOT approved equipement or sticker.
Headlights, Headers, CAT's, Intake and everything can come into play if you were to go by Federal laws. Even to modify your right height can get you a ticket.

Just because it is not enforce where you or others live, doesn't mean it is legal.

As said above with the LT's, find a place that will overlook them for a price.
As far as the cam goes it depends on the specs. Usually a 114LSA with a good tune and cats(be they high flow or stock) will pass the sniffer test.
