Default msd coils vs stock coils

Any body useing msd coils? Did they show any more power? I've heard don't waste your money on them that they do nothing as for as adding more power.

There wouldn't be any gains. But I'd recommend doing it if one ever went bad because I feel that msd accessories last longer than factory. But everyone is going to have a different opinion on that one. It falls hand in hand with the people that say " oil is just oil "

The cost of this one couldn't be justified.

For the amount of money that they cost and the total lack of reliability of them for the other cars I've tried them on because they were actually cost-effective replacements, I'd say....not worth it. Ever.

Seriously. I've tried them on two cars because it was cheaper then stock and they've failed within 5k miles. On my Eclipse I went through 2 of them because I just swapped it with the store and it took only about 2 minutes to remove it. Finally just went back to anouther stock one after getting a refund.

I have their wires on my Eclipse too, and they seem to work fine. They do show some slight carbon burn buildup, but that just wipes off with a paper towel.

Ive had MSD on my LT cars and they werent anything special... they look pretty and thats about it. I wont pay $100 a coil.. Thats just plain retarded... Do you realize you can buy a used wet kit and tune for the price of a new set of MSD coils?

It's a lot of money but it's also purely wasted since they will gain you NOTHING but can cost you a lot when they fail. Not "if", "when".

Unless you have a problem with stock coils, no coil upgrade is going to help you.

Stock coils will be fine. Msd will yield nothing but problems.

Ok, so if MSD is so bad, what coil can we "upgrade" to...? I know some guys are using LS3 coils or truck coils.... is this change purely cosmetic or is there some kind of gain from them?

I've never had a single problem with my MSD coils. That's a lot of internet hear-say. When they were first released there was a problem with them cracking, but MSD has fixed that problem and it doesn't happen anymore. (They just can't shake the bad rep that they got when the coils were first released.)

^^Sounds like Scorpions roller rockers when they were first released.

Not to fan the flames, as I sure as hell wouldn't buy them, but Tony Mamo himself is running them on his new build.....

To those who never tested the 8245 MSD (I guess they are numerous!!!)...I did a back to back test three time.
That was tested back to back on Dynojet, and in town/street driving

Regarding power and drivability, I have seen and measured the improvements advertized by the company.

I am still using the 8245 MSD on my car.

The MSD coils are crap.

LS2/3 style coils have more energy output compared to LS1/6 coils. The truck coils with the heat sink have the most energy and different dwell times. Very popular with the boosted crowd. You'll need to adjust the PCM to take full advantage of them.

On a stock engine, the truck coils won't do much.

LS1/6 coils have their own harnesses and plugs. All later coil packs have the LS2 style harnesses and plugs/pin outs.

Coil to valve cover mounting brackets also differ with the different styles of coils.

So using coils off a L96 truck engine would be fine on a mild boosted engine?
