Default Borla XR1 race mufflers...

I might be able to get a good deal on some Borla XR1's. Seems like alot of people use them when they go true duals. I am going to a MADMAN torque arm setup which requires that I ditch my catback. I will probably set this up so the exhaust dumps before the rear somehow...with dual cutouts and a mounting setup that allows me to pull this off the car easy for racing.

How do these actually sound? Right now I run a mild heads/cam package....soon enought I'm going to a 427 (once I finish putting it together). I usually run around town with my cutout either open all the way, or only halfway open, so noise isn't a factor.

Thanks
Conrad

I think they sound great! Mine's the Offset Oval XR1 with a 4 inch inlet/outlet. It has a crisp sound to it without cats; sounds like NASCAR when you put your foot in it.

I thought ground clearance was an issue on the driver's side if the BORLA XR1 is used. The passenger's side is ok because it has the allocation for the exhaust on that side.

Is there anything special about borlas that make them sound better than other straight through mufflers?

Yes, that can be a problem. Since I wanted my car as low as possible and didn't want to scrape, I modified my floorpan to make more room for the muffler. I chose to run a 4" inch single exhaust rather than duals, so I only had to modify the floor pan on one side. Now the rear seat sits a little higher than it used to, but it's not that noticeable.

Most straight through mufflers don't have enough internal volume to do a good job of controling noise. XR1's have the outward shape of a normal muffler, but they are staight through internally; this is a good combination. Glass pack mufflers sound good also, but the fiberglass quickly blows out or gets burned up. Borla's use stainless steel wool as packing, which never wears out or blows out. In fact the entire muffler is completely made of stainless steel, so it shouldn't ever need replacement.

I am planning to add an XR-1 to the I-pipe of my GMMG when I switch to an ORY. With regard to fit and ground clearance, which XR-1 is everyone using? The 5" round or the oval? I have asked this question before and haven't gotten a solid answer.

I have heard of people using oval or the round muffler. The ones I have heard usin the oval muffler used the offset i/o on the same side. This muffler is much more expensive than the round one.

It's more than twice as much!...but if it works better than the standard oval or round, I guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet! Any other thoughts or opinions on this??

I'm doing the same but I am keeping the cats. I do have the GMMG and I have the heads/cam/headers too and it's LOUD right now, even with the cats. The XR-1 + cats should make it just perfect.

Flow will be like this:

QTP Headers---> QTP Catted Y-Pipe---->XR-1 round---->GMMG--->rustang's face

Can't wait to test it!! Without the XR-1 (as it is right now) = annoying drone.

I would get the round muffler. People have had good luck with it. Why spend a extra $100 if you dont need to?

I imagine 2 XR-1 in a true dual configuration would sound awesome! I love the sound of my (single XR-1) Borlamouth. Here is a post where I put some sounds of it.
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-external-engine/369021-how-reduce-my-exhaust-sounds.html

Also I don't think you need a cutouts as the Borla is a straigh through muffler. I really doubt that you would gain any power. And the sound will still be loud yet more refined than having the cutout's open. Here is a pict from another post.

Prob. for sound control. I have heard XR-1's are pretty quiet at idle, etc. but at wot sound amazing.
