Speed Engineering Race Version Headers Now Available!!
#46
I ordered these with the hopes I would just be able to install them and be on my way but after receiving the headers I noticed they would need some work. First thing, the collector on the drive side had a flat spot (possibly due to bad packaging?), but hopefully this can be fixed easily with a hammer. On the flange there was some welding splatter that will need to be filed down so the gasket sits flush. I plan on picking up a set of mls gaskets for the install since the gaskets that come with these seem pretty cheap. The welds on the inside of the runners are not very good and it looks like these will need to be smoothed out but I'm a bit worried about taking off to much metal and creating leaks. Not to sure if I just had bad luck or if the rest of these are like this. I will post up pics later tonight.

I have been personally checking about 85% of the headers going out the door. So far we haven't seen any damaged collectors. I am assuming UPS damaged the collector in shipping. We also recommend running GM MLS gaskets, as why we offer them on the website with our headers. The ones they send are just cheap paper ones we leave in the box.
Flange quality doesn't seem to bad on the ones we have checked. However, we did send an email over, which requested them to be cleaned up a little better on the next batch.
Thanks
Sean

I'd like to see additional pics also. Primarily the welds and gasket surface. I'm kind of torn between these and BBK's. I'd rather stainless. Thanks

Twix mixt, that collector looks like shipping damage & would be easy for me to fix. If you can't , an exhaust shop could stick it over their expander & bump it just enough to round it back out for a minimal charge. the welding spatter is easy enough to clean up also.
if you have means to do so, not a bad idea to check ANY header or manifold flange for straightness. I own an 18" wet stone I used for guitar neck fret flattening that would be great for this use. A scrap of thick countertop granite with stick on sandpaper makes a great straightening tool. Granite fabricators generally have scraps.
Any large lumps on inside or spatter can be cleaned up with double carbide burr bits easily. If you're just removing large protrusions, you shouldn,t be weakening anything.
PS, no one ever commented on a question I asked::::: Is there any proven way to keep some shine on stainless headers in use???

Well looks like I will be able to post my own pics of these things soon. Was looking at my recent credit card activity last night and saw a hit going to Speed Engineering. The wifey knows what I want for Xmas!!! I'll still act surprised, but I'm pretty sure she always knows that I already know what she is getting me.

That is funny..... Yeah, she's taking all of next week off. Well hopefully it does arrive in time and hopefully shes around when UPS or Fedex drops it off because I often have to come home and walk right past a big box in my driveway, make pretend I never even noticed it until she comes home and hides it.
I've been waiting for these things to come out forever, I'm pumped.
Thanks for working things out for my special lady.
