Default Will old Sun Tach Work? I searched first.

Will an old Sun tach (with black, red, green and blue wires) work with an LS1 PCM? I read that you want to use 4 cylinder mode with some tachs. So if I set it to 4 cylinder mode and hook the tach's green wire to the PCM's tach out wire should I be good to go? BTW, the engine is in a 1975 Volvo.

I can't think of any reason why it won't work. Try it out and let us know.

Thumbs down

I might be wrong, but if it is like 15-20 years old--no...asked this question 5 years ago at local speed shop and they said it may work, but it will not read rpm's correctly---I picked up a 5"autometer with shift light, memory, record, etc. ...am very glad I did--old stuff in new cars looks stupid in my opinion... [just noticed you said VOLVO----With an lt1/ls1????????? my friend has a '84 volvo with an lt1--some company in CALI.does stuff for Jags and volvo's-all the stuff you need for a basic bolt-in---this company made 5 for Paul Newman over the years--

The engine is a 1997 Camaro 3.8 V6 which I have seen referred to as an LS1. At any rate, I have found this forum to be helpful and applicable. BTW, the engine is bolted up to a 1986 S10 700R4 with transfer case and the car has a Cherokee Dana 30 in the front. I have driven it back and forth a couple of feet in the garage. I got the tach for $1 at a garage sale and the whole project has been low budget. Less than $2K in it at this point. Hopefully I'll be posting some pictures in the near future. Probably about a week.

The 3.8L v6 is definately not an LS1. Dont let anyone on this site hear you say that!

Anyway, im not sure about the v6 but I know the v8 engines put out a 4 cylinder tach signal from the pcm. When i connected my shift light, I had to set it to 4cyl mode.

Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying that my 200 hp V6 is in the same league with your 325? hp V8's. I just saw somewhere that the 3.8 PCM was considered to be an LS1 pcm. I have found this site very helpful and almost everything I read on here regarding PCM's works on mine.

325 HP?!? Who on this site has an LS1 only making 325 HP???

Just kidding dude.

Anyway, the v6 PCM is a completely different animal than the ls1 PCM. Definately not related. Furthermore, in 1997 the eight cylinder f-body counterpart would have been the LT1 motor, not the LS1. In any case, the source that gave you this info is now questionable at best. Sorry I cant help you with the specifc problem.

Thanks for roonin' my funny... I figured he was talking about crank HP, not RWHP, so hopefully everyone's still making 325+ unless they havnt changed their air filter in 100K miles, or they pulled a plug wire.

But youre right. Id be willing to bet less than half have modded past a lid and a flowmaster.
