Default Coated or painted?

I don't really want to drop the cash on stainless. I know that people are always bitchin about coated headers chippin and rusting, but wouldn't the painted be worse? Which would you personally put on your car, looks aside.

Coated is better, it reduces under hood temps.

If I had my way I'd get ceramic/jethot coated stainless steel headers. The best of both worlds.

From my past experience, painting headers is a complete waste of time. I plan to go with stainless and would like to have them coated but may save the coating money for something else.

I got Coated Stainless headers with the Jethot Sterling finish (looks like polished). Even with stainless headers, there is some corrosion that happens at high temps... besides you get all the benefits

-Lower underhood temps
-hotter exhaust temp maintained = faster flow
-Great looks
-lifetime durability
-oh, and did i mention GREAT LOOKS

Oh, and for the paint, it pretty much flakes off after the few times of running.

I didn't vote. I have uncoated pacesetters, is what I
could afford, plain and simple.
Let your wallet (or credit card) be your guide.
SS is the way to go. Quicker heat distribution, also.
Then coated.
Then, well, you know.
Never really thought about it, I guess coated SS
would be great, as far as underhood temps go.

Whatever happend to chrome. $$$

...I should add that my pacesetters were painted, I
stripped the paint and repainted with high temp
(sic) ceramic paint.Red, LOL. The paint on the primaries
to within about 6" of the collectors was gone in a
few days. Still exists on the collectors and flanges, LOL.

Coated pacesetters are NOT a whole lot more than painted. Go coated, its only like $375 right now.

The aluminum-ceramic coating on my SLP LTs looks as pretty as the day they were installed, and it's way cooler under the hood since...

I think now there is no way to go but stainless or a good coating like jet hot. I have coated PS that are rusting and flaking bad. If you only drive the car on nice dry days those headers may last, but I have hand brushed all the rust and flaked off what I could and painted half the header. Wish now I would have just waited and spent the money for stainless like I probably will be doing at some point soon.

Coated, and then use something like POR high temp
to touch up any scrapes & flakes occasionally.

Some headers coat only the outside, which makes
them pretty but will let them burn from the inside
out (just like uncoated).

Someday when the price of stainless has bottomed
out I'll go stainless; for now, used Jet-Hots are on
the wall a-waitin'.

I would think that coated would last longer than painted keeping things cool under the hood is nice too.

I have seen first hand what happens to headers that have been just painted or the coated ones for that matter. The non coated, just painted just rust away! It looks terrible and will not last you long if you are around alot of snow/salt. As far as coated, I had Flowtech's coated lt's and they did not rust, besides the welds, which may have been due to the fact that whatever they used to weld was not as good as stainless.
