are you sure it's a 98 and a LS1?
ALL Ls1's are aluminium, some people use the truck engine (same gen but different number) and these are generally 6.0 or are taken out to 408ci.
As for the intake, well I think you need to find out what you have to begin with then how much you want to spend.
If you do actually have a 1998 LS1 then it will have the LS1 intake.
The more you spend the more performance potential.
1. Stock LS1 intake and ported TB
2. Stock LS6 intake and ported TB
3. TPIS 90mm LS6 intake and 90mm TB
4. FAST 90mm intake & Nick Williams 90mm TB
However, the LS1 is actually pretty good and will match the LS6 upto about 5000rpm. A ported TB is a great idea and free if you do it yourself.
But in all honesty an intake change wouldn't be the first mod I do personally, have you done anything else to the car?

On the rear driver's side bellhousing lip there is a laser etched number. That number will tell you what year it is and what it came out of. I forget the website that can decode it, but if you do a search on here you should find it. Also on the back of the block it should have 5.7 cast into it somewhere.

I would think you could tell the difference between iron and aluminum.
As far as the ls6 intake not being much better than the ls1 except after 5000rpms. You may want to look at this. Albeit it has a cam and bolt-ons, but still. Looks like a good amount throughout the entire range.

Although the LS1 isn't far behind it all the way up to about 4500rpm the it's game over.
