Default Aluminized Steel - How Long Does It Last?

I'm considering buying a Spintech cat-back for my GTO the problem is they don't sell a stainless steel version and my car is a DD and will see alot of salt in the winter. How long can reasonably expect it to last before rusting out?

A very long time. Even with the salt it should go at least 5 years....

I had an aluminized cat-back from Gibson. I fish saltwater a lot and sometimes used a backdown, but most of the time my boat was picked up by a hoist. In less than 3 years it was rusted out which is the only thing it's NOT guaranteed for and that's the one reason you're going to need a guarantee. BUY STAINLESS if you're around saltwater. That's what I switched to and 5 years later no rust. Spend the extra money on stainless and be done with it.

I'm gonna try POR-15 on my exhaust and see how that holds up (most of it is aluminized). Even with paint, mine is rusting in a few spots...luckily it is only surface rust at this point.

I used to have a flowmastser and developed about a 1.5 inch rust hole in the muffler. After 1 year when I lived near the beach. Will never buy anything less then stainless!

Coat it with BBQ spray paint. That'll help you out.

yes, painting will help a lot. Here's another tip: put anti-seize on the slip on areas and on the muffler clamps. You will be thanking yourself later on, if you have to remove it! Most of the problem with aluminized steel happens where the cuts are made (exposing the steel) and also if rocks and such scratch off the Al coating.

Just buy a magnaflow cat back sells for about $450.00. Well worth the investment. No painting, no worries, and lifetime warrenty.

FWIW I put a dynomax catback (aluminized) on my IROC in 1992, it was a DD until 2000, no rust on it at all, and that was thru several New England winters (don't know if that's typical or not)

Yeah $450 on an F-Body not a GTO, unfortunately things are more exspensive for the GTO. Also I'm not crazy about how Magnaflows sound but I love how Spintechs sound.

I would NEVER consider anything but 409 or 304L Stainless Steel for an exhaust in wintry / salty climates. Not unless you enjoy re-doing your exhaust every few years (if you're lucky...). Spending more $$ now will save you more $$ (by having to purchase another exhaust) and TIME later on....
