Default Right Rear 02 Sensor - Rattling Sound Inside Pipe

02 WS6 TA
There is a rattling sound coming from inside the pipe where the 02 sensor screws in. Yes, I am sure it isn't the bracket or a loose bolt, it's inside the pipe. You can bang on the pipe and hear it right in there. It really rattles when the car is idling, very annoying.

Is this typical of the stock 02 sensors in this car? Should I change it out? I'm not getting any SES lights.

If it's rattling from INSIDE the cat most likely it's coming apart, normally they'll throw a P0420 or P0430 code depending on which side it is. Make sure the sensor is fully screwed in.

I took the sensor out and the rattle in the pipe is gone. Put it back in and the rattle returns. The sound is coming from the sensor itself, no doubt about it.

Does the sensor rattle if you shake it in your hand? Replace it?

I've got a crazy rattle over there too, I never thought it would be the O2 sensor but thatd definetely worth checking out. Do you have longtubes or still manifolds ?

Default Fixed

I know I started this thread along time ago, but since I finally solved the issue today I wanted to close out the thread with the answer.

I bought two Standard Automotive Products, Inc. O2 sensors, Part. No SG274, and changed both rear sensors. The rattle is 100% completely gone. Both of my stock OEM 02 sensors rattled at idle or when you banged on the pipe. Yes, the OEM sensors were in the pipe as tight as they could go. I think the sound comes from the metal swivel where the wires enter the sensor. I tried puting RTV sealant and tape around them, but no matter what they would still rattle.

Anyway, these new sensors had a nice, rubber grommet instead of that metal swivel so there isn't anything that can rattle on them. They also came pre-coated with anti-sieze on the threads. Not too bad for $45 each.

The rattle is coming from inside the sensor. It's not coming from the ring.

This is correct.

Old thread, but the answer is still relevant. I discovered this same problem many years ago on one of mine. Manipulating that ring did nothing to change the rattle, it was something inside the sensor that was rattling. They seem to be more prone to this when they have been removed and reinstalled (perhaps over torqued?).

In any event, replacing the sensor is the fix. Or just deleting it and plugging the hole if it's a rear sensor.
