Default Considering a Y-Pipe

I am thinking of putting a new Y-Pipe in. I checked the factory one and it is pretty restrictive. Are they worth the money? What kind of gains can I expect? Where is the best place to buy one? Also, do they bolt right up to the stock cats, no welding? I have to keep the car emissions legal in California. Any help is appreciated.

The Y pipe does make a difference, yes the diameter is the same, but the restriction on the drivers side does effect the exhaust flow. My Y pipe made a by the seat of your pants difference. just imop. Vic

a random tech y pipe did wonders for me, and even though it was wider than stock and not flatened, i gained a little more clearance than with the stock piece. now i just smack my tranny on speedbumps instead of the pipe. damn those speedbumps!

L.G. Motorsports makes a nice stainless 2&3/4" bolt-on Y-pipe for the '00-'02 F bod's. Whether or not it gives you a pony or two, I cannot say.....Anyone KNOW FOR SURE one way or another? WJ. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

don't waste your money on a Y pipe...the dimensions are the same and it will not provide you much performance if any....the Ypipe has the flat side which does look restrictive....but it has the same diameter as the other side.....GM did it that way for clearance issues.......which of course you will encounter with aftermarket Y pipes....but that is another subject.....just my 2 cents!

It may be worth a pony or two (maybe) , but if you are considering headers in the near future, don't waste the $$$. On the other hand you can always sell it and get most of your $$ back. My .02.

Save your money and get a set of long tube headers. Hookers or Macs would be a better investment than a y-pipe.

Some people w/'01-'02 cars are getting just about the same results w/off-road bolt-on Y pipes w/02 simms as people w/headers. That's with a good cat-back exhaust, of course. That should stir up this conversation some..... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> WJ.

If you have no intentions of getting headers, I think
a y-pipe would not be a bad investment. Most people see about a 5-7hp gain from them. I just ordered one
from SLP. I know that I'm going to have to do some welding on mine (mines a 98), but on yours, I don't think any welding is required. I'm just wondering how my SLP Loud Mouth is going to sound with the addition of the y-pipe. Orange Krush, if you're reading this, is there any change in sound?
Thanks! <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

Rob it will get louder no doubt about it, but still very bearable! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

Now add headers <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> after that, well then it's a whole new ballgame! <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" />

Random Tech makes a cats & y-pipe that moves the cats up so there is more clearance underneath. That is what I am getting for my lowered t/a. Remember headers void warranties! Of course once the warranty expires, I will be getting headers!!!

Are the Y-Pipes no good with headers? I was always under the assumption that, since I live in California I would have to buy exhaust products that kept the stock location of the cats. I was hoping to buy short headers. I know that they are not as good as the long tubes, but they are smog leagal. If I install short headers, will the Y-Pipe still fit? Also, how much will short headers change the sound as compared to long tubes? I heard a 94 Z28 yesterday with headers, not sure which ones, and it sounded really mild.

Ok, I saw Mac True Fit Headers with Y-Pipe w/Cats. I would assume that would be smog legal in California. Would this be a good choice? I hae the Loudmouth, would the sound be un-bearable? I like the sound now, I think Camaro's should be loud. That is my preference. Let me know.

Added a G2 y- pipe, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" /> Drone gone! SOP dif. also!
