Default Throttle Body Question

I was cleaning up my engine this weekand and i looked in my throttle body and seen a film of black residue. Is this normal? It didnt look bad and i just cleaned out what i could get to. I was told there is a kit or cleaner of some sort to clean the whole intake out? Has anyone ever heard of this? or even better done this? Thanks

I didn't like the idea of pouring stuff into the spark plug openings. Where do you spray the aerosol? Is it as effective? TIA.

When I did my ported TB I used a core that
was either a truck or an earlier-year Fbody.
Anyway, this had a lot of black oily film
on it too. I believe this was from the PCV
fresh air line as it was biased toward that
side of the TB. I reckon an oily air filter
would contribute some film too, but you
wouldn't see that have a lot of combustion
products in it, only fine dust. I believe
that as these cars age, and produce more blowby,
that the PCV fresh air line will begin to draw
engine vapor backward under conditions where
the vacuum in front of and behind the TB are
not too different (WOT) and the intake tract
is a vacuum relative to the crankcase.

I think the black residue that you are finding is from your EGR. It is the exhaust gas that is what you are finding. I don't have it on my z, but my grandprix has a lot of this on the back side of the TB.
I just cleaned the inside of the TB with TB cleaner. I can't do much else on the grandprix though. Supercharger and all.

Black stuff on the back of the throttle plate and in the bore is normal to most every pfi engine. It is a carbon/soot buildup from EGR and PCV cycling back through the intake. Cars with no K&N get this buildup too. It can be cleaned with air intake cleaner (aerasol) sprayed and rub the surfaces with your finger while holding the plate open. Repeat until clean with engine off. Enough buildup here can also cause your accelerator to stick closed and higher pedal effort off idle.
