mass air flow sensor options
what would be the best idea for the money, new maf ends,
slp maf or the z06 maf upgrade?
not sure what to do
and will the air lid fit with a 85mm maf if i choose to do so

I have the 85 SLP MAF and I've had mine on autotap and my fuel trims are PERFECT with the added air you get from this.. So I saw go with SLP!

Re: mass air flow sensor options
I dynoed with only a lid and filter. Then I put on the SLP 85mm MAF. Definitely a SOTP feel in throttle response. No dyno numbers yet, but sure does feel quicker to the touch. And yes, the SLP lid fit mine with the 85mm MAF. I did have to use a little vasoline on the bellow to get them fit up properly, but hey, that means no air loss, right?

Re: mass air flow sensor options
I have a slp maf to but am not running it right now. I did notice a big sotp but when I had the car dynoed I was running pig rich. I took it off and the car felt slow. I drove for a month with the stock one before putting the slp back on. The car still felt slow, but I only drove about 80 miles so the pcm didn't have time to fully relearn the a/f. I am now running the stock maf and don't plan on putting it back on. I would consider gettting a Pace VV though. I haven't heard one problem with that one. Pace makes two maf's for our cars, one with a screen that I've heard compliants about and the vv which is screenless and no problem heard of. As far as a air lid do you have one or are looking to get one? TSP makes a 85mm lid for larger maf's. Mine fitted fine with a direct flow lid.

Re: mass air flow sensor options
I have an SLP 85mm on an '02 and it seems to be
dead-nuts (I have small negative LTFTs and I can
put the WOT O2s anywhere from 0.8xx to 0.94x volts
with the Predator). It works well with the stock
tune and the Predator performance canned tune at
unmodified settings (no KR at +0 timing, +0 PE)
and at +10% timing, +2% PE (out of 5% user range).
I've seen several people have problems with the
'98-'00 SLP 85mm apparently leaning out the car
up top.
Seen even more who report picking up lean mixture
problems with GMAF.
I think both of these relate to the folk wisdom
that these cars "need to be leaned out" for best
power, but it seems that this is done shotgun and
not just where it might be needed. The leaning
and higher advance make the car feel more
responsive at part throttle, but there's not
enough power enrichment to make WOT truly happy
and cover the added mixture error, so you can end
up chasing knock retard.
You have to be real careful about what you read
into the manufacturers' descriptions, and look
for what they are carefully leaving out.
And the best bang for the buck is still to keep
that buck for something else, and use the stock
unit. Especially those $300 MAFs - ??? Crazy.

Re: mass air flow sensor options
Just my $.02, but when I took my car to the dyno session at Speed, Inc., they took off my ported MAF ends and put stock ones back on. They calaim that the diffuser on the stock MAF helps give the car a dead- nuts tune, and that open ends (like the ones on my ported, and on many aftermarket MAF's) screw up the MAF readings to the point of getting back to back pulls where the A/F ratio is off by a full point (i.e. 12:1 vs 13:1). They also stated that they've had the stock MAF on 600+ hp cars and would reccomend it to anyone. Call 'em up if you like.

Re: mass air flow sensor options
don't descreen it, the screen barely blocks that much air, it it did by now gm would have removed and or changed it. all it does is protect the thin wires in side. my friend , the idiot that he is was taking of the screens, after finishing it we tested it on the road, if any differance...it was minimal. but greatest part when we were putting on out own home made "slp" neck bezel we noticed a twig got it broke one of the wires and set of the SES light....new maf...150$ new bezel 21$....look on the idiots face when he brook it.....priceless
