Exhaus Clip How To

Exhaus Clip How To
I myself and others get annoyed by some of the exhaust clips that we hear. The whole point of requesting a clip is to hear the full range of that particular exhaust. If i'm looking into buying a cat-back or want to go with duals I want to hear more than just 20 seconds of idle and revs. Well since I have been complimented on my exhaust clips I figured why not share the methods I use. Nothing overly complicated just a few key steps.
1. Make sure you have someone who can film it and if you don't have someone who can film it use a tri-pod or set the camera on something other than the ground (just in case you forget its there and run over it).
2. Start the camera to make sure you record the startup.
3. Let the car idle for 10-20 seconds and then rev the engine so that the listener can actually hear the startup, idle, rev transition.
4. After a few revs stop the camera and don't start recording again until you are in a good shooting position to film a takeoff and drive by.
5. Filming the takeoff and drive by are especially important because it tells the listener how the exhaust sounds while driving (do it from different speeds) and if rasp is overly annoying.
6. A high speed fly by is another possible shot to get only if you are able to, otherwise wait until you have help. If you don't have help it can be done but better with it.
7. You can also film how the exhaust sounds inside the car with the windows donw/up, but just make sure that the radio is off or turned down because we don't want to hear the music only the exhaust.
8. Since most of the earlier shots were of the exhaust in drive get one in reverse and before you get out of the car give it a few more revs and maybe a 5 second idle.
My car with the lm2 system and borla x-r1 muffler (Borlamouth)

I may have left something out but the morale of the story is someone looking to buy a particular system wants to actually hear how it sounds across the range. Make it more than a few seconds and all should be well. I hope this helps everyone out. Yes it may have been simple but I actually get request to help people out with this.

I always complain about the same thing......and then I go and post 2 of the worst clips I've ever seen lol. I had about 15minutes to drive the car so I kinda of hurried through it. When the weather gets nice, I plan on doing something similar to the clip you posted above, though I normally don't put the camera directly into the path of the exhaust....seems to mess with the mic a bit and sometimes produce wind noise. I try to set it off to the side. Nice car by the way! My buddy had one identical to it with 21k miles on it and totalled it in July.

Also if possible, add a 1/4 mile flyby to the tape. The high revs are important. And yes, I can not launch properly.

Sounds clean. I want to make one starting from when I leave the shop after the new motor has just been built, the drive to the dyno, then the dyno session and ending with how it sounds on the drive home. After editing it should be about 2-3min long.

I also get annoyed when the camera is too close to the rear of the car. The sound is very distorted, especially at higher RPMs. This happens especially when the camera is on the ground. Good cheap tripods are available at Wamalart for around $20.

i've always liked the way the magnaflow site has there's. The guy pulls up, lets it idle for a second, revs a few times, and then takes off at WOT. Short, but to the point.

I also am always annoyed by 90% of the exhaust videos you hear on the web. What seems to be common sense to me apparently escapes that 90% of the people posting the videos.
They always put the camera WAY too close, and the camera has a hard time dealing with the bass/volume of the exhaust and it ends up being a distorted mess. Or they just have the car sitting there idling, or if they do rev it...it's some pathetic little 1800rpm vroom. The list goes on and on.
So, I also set out to create my own exhaust video when I got my new B&B Bullet setup installed. I went out ASAP and started making my own. I did what I could by myself and then edited the video to what I thought was decent. Although, since I was by myself I didn't do any drive-by's, outside acceleration, hard acceralation from inside the vehicle (for safety reasons since I was holding the camera), extended city driving to show all manners of the setup, etc...
Once I get a buddy to help me out though, I'll be filming the rest of the stuff. Once that is filmed, I'll be taking what I have already done and modifying it to include the new parts. Piece of cake, and shows the full range of the setup.
Anyway, here is what I have so far. It's still a bit rough, but the best I can do while doing it all myself.
