Oil smoke on Decelleration???
I've got an 02 LS1 in my Miata, and I have noticed that after hard accel, during decel, it intermittantly lets out some oil smoke. I took it to a local LS1 performance shop and they suggested to get the LS6 valley cover, and PCV, and also run a catch can. Well they went ahead and did that at the cost of $700 and during a 2nd through top of 4th pull sunday it did it again. I called the shop and the head guy is at a PRI show this week, but the guy on the phone said something about the oil rings fluttering or something like that?? Any input is appreciated.

Earlier LS1 cars, particularly in vettes had an issue at higher rpm would get ring flutter at which would eat up oil in large amounts, like as much as 1 quart in 1k miles. This would happen in 2nd gear in the mid rpm range mostly. Gm's solution to this was to alter the driver's habits by ie shifting to the next gear.
If it still happened to consume oil, then they would change the rings. If on decel, you are going through the exact same conditions as those early cars, then you'd get oil going by the rings.

A buddy of mine has a 2000 z28, it does the same thing. He did put a catch can on it and it helped a little but the engine still does it every now and then, after hard acceleration.
